It is an expansive scene, large enough to invite the viewer to feel he is a part of it. I suppose the work is Swedish or Danish. The artist chose to sign with just the conjoined initials "HM" at lower left, where it is also dated 1948...

The in-frame dimensions are 38" W x 30" H while the painting itself measures 28 1/4" W x 20 1/4" H. The amazing frame is from the 19th Century and showcases the beauty of the piece. The subject matter is Venus (in her Half Shell chariot pulled by doves) finding Adonis dead after the hunt she begged him not to go on.

This is a gorgeous original lithograph of ancient Greek ruins by Joseph Pennell, from his series "In the Land of Temples", based on his travels through Greece and Italy. The image size is 16 1/2 x 21 3/4 inches, published in 1913 in a very small edition of 50, printed on a watermarked wove type paper, pencil signed...
