Poem 72-47 (road) 32 X 21.5 inches textured paper The sun is the inner part of the kanji for road. This is a very big and stunning Maki print It was done in 1972 at the height of his artistic powers. It depicts the kanji for Road or Way, e.g.the Way of Taoism (Daoism). As if done with a brush, the character whooshes across the well-textured paper. At the middle of the print, Maki has added a White Sun.

From our European Collection, a fine 19th century original oil on panel by British painter and listed artist William Anslow Thornley (1857-1898), entitled "Moonlight on the Thames." Signed "Thornley" lower left.

Size and condition: 13 inches x 11 inches framed dimensions, approximately 10 inches x 8 inches unframed image size. This painting has been taken care of well, there is only some very minor age-related soiling and minor scuffing to the frame.

A mid-Victorian chromolithographic print c1860-80 in a period gilt frame depicting two kissing children with a doll. This unsigned 7-1/4 x 5-1/2" print is mounted on a lined mat and encased on a period 11 x 9" gilt wood frame with original glass; it is in excellent original condition with no rips, tears, foxing, staining, fading, losses, damage or repairs other than a small water stain to the mat on the lower right corner and some minor scrapes to the gilding on the frame...

This is an old colorful Persian miniature painting on panel featuring a Polo game, an ancient sport in Persia well enjoyed by Royalty or aristocratic class. The men on the horseback are in colorful dress and the whole scenery is lively and vibrant. The panel measures 9.5" x 3.5" housed in a frame which itself is made of small fragments of bone with measurements of 11-1/4" x 5-3/8"...

This is an old colorful Persian miniature painting on a panel featuring a courtship scenery depicting couples drinking and playing music mounted on a hand painted floral designed, all housed in a wooden frame covered with hand made geometric design. The scenery is very lively with choice of vibrant colors. The panel measures 9.5" x 7" and frame which itself is made of small fragments of bone is 14-5/8" x 12-1/4"...

In 1960 Maki did the image shown. It is called Symbol. In all the years of collecting Maki prints and images I have never seen this one again. It is quite large but seems cluttered. Forty years later he did it as a print and a post card even as one friend has suggested he did the print before 1999, the date on the print. The seals are authentic not printed, and they are original Maki seals from well-used chops.

An evocative and well-painted framed 22-1/4" x 14-1/2" (sight size) English oil on canvas by Charles Cattermole (R.I., R.B.A., R.O.I. 1832–1900). Entitled "The Patrol's Return" on a mounted plaque on the 31-1/2" x 24" wood and plaster frame, this painting is signed CHAS CATTERMOLE on the lower right. The back has a Toronto gallery label from 1949 and the canvas is numbered 908 on the back...

Haku Maki did many prints some with interesting backgrounds some not. This modest run of rather large pints had a special black background: it is the texture of old leather. . Maki created and used this technique only in 1981 prints and mainly in persimmons. The persimmons are plump and meaty the green leaves of the fruit are nicely proportioned.
