A dramatic early black and white photo of the Empire State Building in Manhattan, photographer unknown, the structure featuring prominently at center of the image, surrounded by the lower buildings from which it emerges. The building was completed in 1931. Some information I saw online suggests the antenna was not placed until as late as 1952. The photo dates from somewhere in that period, and very likely to the early/mid 1930's...

Fine old 19th century watercolor painting of a cavalier-type figure and a woman trying the new batch of wine as it comes from the cask, a friendly dog lazing at right. The painting measures 10 1/4" by 13 1/2" inside the mat, (presently essentially unframed, the frame is in poor condition and is very inexpensive to begin with), signed at lower right by artist Gamba da Vinza. I have researched the name and do not find a listing for this artist, who was obviously well trained...

A gray soapstone carving of a blubbery walrus, measuring roughly 8" by 2" by 2". These carvings, which make great paperweights, sold as tourist art in northern, Arctic regions of Canada at mid century remain popular, and a secondary market has evolved. The artist has reduced the familiar animal to a stylized, modern form. Condition is good with no chips. See several other similar works in my shop.

A charming painting done in watercolor on organic material. The child, identified as E.A. Brown (1845-1850) is portrayed against a pink and blue clouded background, indicative that this is a mourning memento. Paintings of young children are always highly sought after and collected.

The painting is in excellent condition, with no issues. The case is damaged on the back, with a section missing, which does not detract from the desirability of this little gem. The size is 1 5/8" by 1 1/4".

An original 17th century etching, "God Appears to Moses in the Burning Bush", plate 30 from the well-known series of 52 published in 1615 in Rome by Giovanni Giacomo Rossi, the artist being ORAZIO BORGIANNI (1578-1616). These works are after the frescoes by Raphael on the second floor of the Apostolic Church in the Vatican. Borgianni, a Baroque painter who adopted the style of Caravaggio after settling in Rome in 1604, turned to etching in the final years of his short life...

A simple yet satisfying little watercolor depicting central Paris along the river Seine, Notre Dame in the center distance. The work is signed at lower left by French mid century artist Fernand Guignier and dated there 1966. Guignier is listed, with some auction records, but there does not appear to be an extensive biography. Large 30" by 48" painting on Masonite (36" by 54" nicely framed) signed at lower right "Sardi". There is a listed artist Jean Sardi (1947-) but his works do not seem to resemble this and the signature differs. This is a thinned paint on rough side of the Masonite. A previous similar work I handled, by this artist, had an original pre-zip code label from Karl Mann Associates in NYC, apparently a well known interior design firm for decades, a label from the firm considered a good provenance...

A very rare Han Dynasty Chinese Terra Cotta Guanyin sculpture measuring 16” in height. The sculpture with traces of polychrome. Dressed in fine clothes, it was made as an object of worship and most likely had a bouquet in her left hand, as a symbol of marriage. An incredible rare piece for the advanced collector.

A watercolor painting featuring a scenic view of what I believe to be the cliffs of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, signed at lower left by California artist Dolores Manning. The 20" by 14" work (26" by 20" framed) is by a woman artist who recently passed away in Malibu, California. A number of her works were available for purchase at the estate sale. Apparently she had lived in the San Francisco Bay area (Moraga, CA labels on the reverse of several) and also in the area around Lake Tahoe...
