Watercolor on paper laid on board painting of roses and hollyhocks in an intimate garden enclosed by a wall or structure, 16 1/4" by 13" and 1 1/4" wide frame, unsigned, executed late 19th or early 20th century. The artist's mastery of watercolor is clear, but unfortunately he or she failed to sign the work, which resembles paintings by members of the Stannard family of watercolorists (Henry John Sylvester 1870-1951, Lilian 1877-1944, Theresa 1898-1947)...

Unsigned oil on canvas, circa 1970's or 1980's, unframed, 28" by 22", the subject a ceremonial dance mask and head wear such as might be seen in use in the course of special events on one of the reservations in Arizona or New Mexico. Sydenham was the son of a Welsh schoolmaster, and went on to become one of the principal artists for Curtis's Botanical Magazine late in the 18th and early in the 19th century. Acrylic on canvas painting in black, red and blue on white background, 28" by 39 1/2" as framed, signed in the lower left corner "J. Brooks". I am offering this as a bold, modern decorative painting, and NOT as a genuine work of the important American artist James D. Brooks (1906-1992). Condition is excellent and save for some wear on the cream-colored frame, this is ready for display.

Impressionist oil painting of stands of white birch trees by a small lake or large pond, painted on the smooth side of Masonite panel, 9 3/4" by 13 1/2" (12 1/2" by 16" as simply framed), apparently unsigned. The scene suggests a northern latitude, perhaps high elevations in the United States, or Canada or northern Europe, but there is little to go on geography-wise. The artist was skilled and created a peaceful little painting in subdued colors...

Oil on canvas painting of a desert southwestern landscape complete with saguaro cactus, unframed, 16" by 20", signed at lower right "Robert Perkins". I do not see a listing by this name so offer the painting on its decorative values. It is in fair condition, with soiling, stretcher bar show-through/uneven canvas, and two very small punctures at sky on right in a cloud at a few inches above the signature. If you like the painting you could hang it as-is, or you could invest money to fix it up.

Nineteenth century American or European drawing of pink roses, their leaves and prickly stems, unsigned, in an oval shape, 9 3/4" by 7 3/4" (12 3/4" by 10 1/2" as nicely framed). The attention to detail by the artist is exceptional. We could prick our fingertip on the fine thorns. This could be considered a folk art or Victorian piece. It is very fresh and clean, considering the age of the work. Allow for reflections in a few images...

**ONE OF TWO EXAMPLES OF THIS PRINT IN MY SHOP, THE SECOND PRINTED IN DIFFERENT COLOR**From the skilled hand of the noted Art Nouveau period painter, illustrator and decorator HENRI BELLERY-DESFONTAINES (1867-1910) comes this well known image "L'Illusion", printed in the year 1897 by F. Champenois in Paris for the popular series "L'Estampe Moderne". The image is a dreamy one, with undertones of male and female sexuality. Note the elegant gray-brown colors and the blue and white highlights...

I believe the work is likely by a listed artist but I cannot come up with any listing from the name, at least as I am reading it. Perhaps more research might identify the artist. The painting is competently executed...

Chromolithograph print of jockeys on their mounts in a race, circa mid 19th century, 13" by 19" (15" by 21" in modern day dark frame), signed in the image by the noted British Vanity Fair magazine caricature and sporting artist LIBERIO PROSPERI (1854-1928), who signed as "Lib". The print is framed without mat and has some condition issues, including two vertical folding creases, and a damage area at lower center, below the horse's leg (see close up of that)...

One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop), this is a fine image in soft pencil on paper, the drawing itself 14 1/2" by 15 1/2", in a simple frame without mat, signed at lower right by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...

An etching of a Native American brave on horseback, by important California and western American artist EDWARD BOREIN (1872-1945). The print is a restrike, likely made from the original plates at some point after the artist's death. Measurements are 7" by 8 3/4" inside the plate line (the sheet 11" by 15 1/4", and 16" by 18" as framed in worn black painted oak circa 1920 frame). Borein's place in the hierarchy of western American art is secure...

An impressive panoramic alpine landscape painting of jagged mountain peaks at sunset, or dawn (actually titled "Sunrise over the Alps", the alpenglow effect captured beautifully, 27" by 39" (36" by 48" framed), signed at lower right by the artist, Waldner, and bearing placard with the above title and again the artist name...

Attractive contemporary era painting of seven ducks in flight over a marshy estuary on a cloudy afternoon, 24" by 36", unframed, signed at lower right illegibly. I am trying to decipher the signature but so far nothing fits. The size and a stamp on the reverse establishing the copyright rights of the artist suggest that the painting is American. I am sure the artist is listed. Unfortunately due to careless previous owners, there is a significant torn area at lower right in the rippling water...

Watercolor on quality watercolor heavy paper, 14 3/4" by 20" (18 3/4" by 24" as framed), the scenes a tropical street with historic old wood houses, likely Key West, Florida, and another street scene with a lone figure, signed in pencil at lower right something like "Meish...." or "Weish....."; I cannot decipher the name. The aritist probably created this in the 1960's or 1970's, and he or she was skilled with watercolor. The brush strokes are brisk but expertly placed. Condition is excellent...

Watercolor on paper painting of a traditional Chinese junk near the shore of a reedy body of water, 15" by 11 1/2" (20 1/2" by 16 1/2" in simple blond wood look framing), signed at lower left in pencil with what appears to be the name "Tang". The transparent washes and deft handling make for a pleasing and calming image that is a fine alternative to a print. The work is affixed or pressed against the backing by the glass---there is not a proper mount.
