The drawing, 18" by 9" inside the current mat, is very sketchy, as if perhaps a very preliminary study for a finished watercolor or painting. Wingate was born in Dennison, Texas and spent most of his life in Arizona after moving there from California...

French late 19th century oil on canvas still life of flowers in various vessels on a tabletop, signed at upper right corner "J. Billou" (the "J" could be a "G" or "T"). Oddly I do not see a listing that would correspond with this name, but this is clearly a talented artist. The work measures 19 1/2" by 24" (22 1/2" by 27" framed). The colors and handling remind of some Renoir still life paintings. This was found "as-is" in northern New Jersey...

TWO wood engraving prints of the posthumous late 1960's/early 1970's edition of "L'Enfant", each sheet 16 1/2" by 12 7/8", with stamp signature in lower margin, by the important French twentieth century artist ANDRE DERAIN (1880-1954). These are from The Collectors Guild, New York edition, the imagery in red on a black background, each stamped lower right margin "a. Derain". They were found without glass so are in good presentable condition though not mint...

A beautiful pencil drawing of human hands, likely 19th century, measuring 4 1/2" by 5 1/2" inside the ornate French mat, 10 1/4" by 11 1/4" as framed in gilt closed corner framing. There is a little wear in the corners of the frame but the overall look with mat and frame is upscale...

A PAIR of watercolor paintings of classic scenes of Montmartre, each 8 3/8" by 10 3/8" (and each 15" by 17 1/2" as identically framed), each signed at lower left by French artist AMEDEE PREVOST. One work features the white Sacre Coeur church dome in the distance, figures and an artist completing the scene, the other work featuring a street easel artist painting a picturesque old house...

A rare woodcut color print of exotic cacti in small pots on a yellow and white cloth, 9 3/8" by 9 3/8" inside the innermost mat, 18 1/4" by 17 1/2" as framed, pencil signed at lower right by the artist, EMMA (EMILIE LEONORE) MEYER (1859-1921). The paper use is an exceedingly delicate tissue-like paper. This is a finely crafted work by an artist from Denmark, who obviously deserves to be better known...

Watercolor and ink drawing of the iconic world-class sight, the Parthenon atop the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The work is signed in red in Greek at lower right and there is an inscription in Greek handwriting on the reverse. Measurements inside the deep blue mat are 10 1/2" by 7 3/4" (16 1/2" by 13" in simple undistinguished strip frame). The artist has captured with considerable skill a sight that will never be forgotten by anyone who has seen it.

A large watercolor painting in impressive strongly horizontal format, the subject waves rolling in on a coast, sailing boats on the horizon, the work signed at lower left by artist "Langdon". This could be Chauncey Langdon (1828-1907), described on AskArt as a topographical painter from Vermont who came around the Horn to California in the Gold Rush days...

A framed nicely worked crayon on paper drawing of roses (possibly, Alberta wild roses?), signed at lower right "M R 1944". The stiff wove paper sheet measures 15" by 11", and as framed (to the top of the arch), 22" by 17". The framing appears to be the 1940's original. I acquired the work locally here in Los Angeles some years back...

A contemporary painting featuring the streets of Paris' famous Montmartre, the dome of white Sacre Coeur cathedral towering over narrow streets filled with pedestrians. The work measures 10 1/2" by 8 1/2" (12 3/4" by 10 1/2" as framed in black). The work is signed at lower right "Georges" and on reverse is written "Georges---Paris---2010/Montmartre". Condition of painting is excellent but lower left corner of frame shows some damage and there is scuffing elsewhere. Paint it black or reframe.

Contemporary little drawing of what I believe is Pirates Alley in New Orleans' Vieux Carre, 5 1/4" by 3 1/2" inside the mats, 10" by 8 1/4" as framed (no glass, but perfect condition). The signature at bottom appears to be "FERRELL" in capital letters. This is likely a piece produced for the tourist trade, or it's by a talented visitor who wanted to capture this famous scene on paper.

A woodblock print with vivid PRINTED blue, red, green and yellow colors (NOT hand coloring), the subject a street scene in a German town, with extensive pencil writing in the bottom margin and what appears to be the date 1909. I showed images of this old style Germanic handwriting to Galerie Bassenge in Berlin and they were also unable to determine an artist name, but the writing is "Linolschnitt Orig. Handdruck...Alt Bielefeld…Bachstrasse...1909" (linocut, hand printed, Alt Bielefeld, etc.)...

The French fashion and costume magazine "La Mode Illustree" operated from about 1859 through at least the 1920's, featuring the styles of the day. This is a fine engraving, circa 1875 or 1880, judging from the fashion depicted. It is hand colored. Size as framed is 13 1/2" by 9 1/2". The framing though narrow is an interesting design. The print has some overall light browning/aging as would be expected of paper of this age---but it is even and not at all obtrusive...

Original antique English watercolor titled "Fox Gloves by Stream" signed by Joseph Poole Addey (1852-1922), dated 1889. Addey was an especially gifted watercolorist. Born in Dublin, he studied at the Royal Dublin Society School of Design and the Cork School of Art. He began exhibiting at the RHA in 1877, and over the next forty years showed over 130 paintings. A large (extreme dimensions 64 1/2" by 48 1/2"), colorful work I am tempted to call a "wall sculpture painting", by noted contemporary California artist JOHN ROSE. The impressive piece could grace an institutional setting, as indeed many sculptures by the artist now find themselves in hotels and other public spaces and corporate collections. The photos do not give justice to the three dimensionality of the piece, the strips of painted wood layered in complex patterns...

A most unusual modern painting----oil and sand on canvas, 48" by 32" including the frame, which, painted on all edges, can be considered an integral part of the work. The subject is most impressively complex---abstract yet suggestive of perhaps a central fish, or primitive ethnographic art imagery....all in a controlled palette of gray, muted rust red, white, black, and a touch of yellow. A fine, poetic ink drawing of figures, all in an extensive landscape, signed at lower right in pencil with what appears as "Lyberis-Abraham". The Biblical subject seems to be Abraham about to slay Isaac (note the weapon in Abraham's hands, about to swing into the victim). The artist is WILLIAM LYBERIS (1931-), born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and known for landscape, impressionist technique, interiors, and non-objective art. Lyberis spent a lot of time in Paris, absorbing the art resources there. ...

A pleasing watercolor painting of a small sail boat on a lake, trees beyond, painted in an impressionist hand. Unfortunately the talented artist did not sign the work, which is laid down on a card. Framing circa mid 1960's included the old fashioned detail-dulling non-glare glass which should be discarded. The work measures 14" by 10" inside the mat and 19 1/2" by 14 1/2" framed. Condition is excellent other than being laid down, and rusted tack holes in each corner, easily hidden by framing...
