A nice watercolor portrait of a young man, probably in his mid-teens, signed, “Elinor M. Barnard/1933.” The young man with brown hair and eyes wearing an open necked white shirt leans into the picture plane with a sense of youthful eagerness. Elinor Barnard (1872-1942) was born and studied in the UK, but worked mostly in the USA, principally New York City. She has a relaxed and economical style. Sight size 16 3/8 by 12 ¼ inches. These ronin, the loyal retainers, had been Samurai in the service of Lord Asano when he was obligated to commit seppuku for drawing his sword at the Palace of the Shogun. A Japanese woodblock three-part print showing a festival by a river or lake with boats, people in the water, a review stand (?) and numerous people, some with banners. The signature is for Hiroshige III and the censor’s seals for 1855. The paper is laid. Each sheet is approx. 14 5/8 x 9 7/8 inches (35.5 x 25 cm).

Condition: good with one crease to the lower left corner of the middle sheet and bends from being corner mounted with photo corners. Otherwise clean and crisp...

When dating the little sculpture, the hairstyle of Saint Anne and the narrow waist of Mary’s dress points at a time around 1830 or the reign of Charles X in France. Pedestal and sculpture are separable, the pedestal with traces of an address, Middleton Street in London – probably the address of the original retailer...
