This is a relatively earlier (1976 or before) work of the noted Bermudian artist ALFRED BIRDSEY (1912-1996). Birdsey was a familiar figure in Bermuda for decades, a prolific artist, the works of whom traveled with tourists when they returned from holidays. This would account for the wide distribution of his distinctive work. Today his daughter continues the family tradition, with similar looking paintings being sold to visitors. Birdsey worked in gouache or possibly oil or acrylic on paper...

Oil on board, likely Canadian painting of a curling scene on a large ice rink with a large number of spectators and players, painted very competently in a very charming folk-art style, signed at lower right "S. S. Heath" and dated there 1973. The work reminds a bit of the whimsical folky Canadian paintings of Allen Sapp or William Kurelek. Suprisingly, I see absolutely no information or auction record for any artist of this name. The work measures 16" by 20" and 20" by 24" as framed...

A small unframed oil on Masonite painting, 8" by 10", signed at lower left indecipherably, the work a fantasy landscape painted very much in the style of acclaimed California artist Eyvind Earle (1916-2000). The neon green sunlit strip, the surreal shadows cast by rocks there, the bare tree, the hillside, all are reminiscent of Earle's work. A silvery frame might work on this. Surface is a bit dusty, and heavily varnished. There are some very light drips of something at right center.

An excellent example of the watercolor work by the noted New Orleans artist NESTOR FRUGE (1916-2011), 14 1/2" by 10 3/4" (20 1/2" by 16 3/4" framed), featuring the famous and often-painted Brulatour Courtyard in New Orleans. Fruge painted mostly watercolors and was a familiar and beloved part of the Jackson Square tourist scene in New Orleans for decades. He painted mainly French Quarter scenes but also on occasion works such as bayou swamp landscape...

A large oil on canvas, 36" by 24" (44" by 32" framed), the subject a number of circus clowns, skillfully painted, signed at lower right by noted American clown artist ROBERT OWEN (1930-). Owen was born in Polk County, Missouri. For many years he has been recognized as a master at painting clowns. Reproduction prints have been made from many paintings. This example is in excellent condition. Note also the interesting framing.

This is a rather unusual and visually arresting contemporary work by a Japanese or Japanese-American artist, signed at top right "Yasushi Saito" and dated there '78. An oil on canvas, unframed, measuring 23" by 19", the work is difficult to describe: a carp-like blue fish at right center appears with conical mountains that resemble Mount Fuji or desert peaks, as stunted bizarre vegetation, possibly trees, complete the visual feast...

Unlike most commonly seen works by this artist, which are actually serigraph prints, this is an original oil on canvas painting, measuring 34" by 18" (unframed). The scene, which could be described as a floral fantasy, incorporating at least two human heads floating within the composition, is rather typical of the work of the artist, HERMANN DIETRICH (1916-2003). Dietrich's online profile has only in recent years become more developed...

This is a large and impressive work that reminds one perhaps of the painting styles of Raphael Soyer, Robert Brackman, or Robert Phillipp. The young dancer is shown in her tights against a plain background that does not distract the viewer from her lovely figure and stance...

This is a museum poster or flyer issued by the Long Beach Museum of Art in 1972, advertising an exhibition that year of the paintings of the important and still highly underrated Swiss-California modernist HANS GUSTAV BURKHARDT (1904-1994). The unframed sheet measures 24 1/4" by 18", and bears the complementary signature of the artist in blue ink at lower right just below the black area of the central image. Burkhardt was born in Switzerland and arrived in America in 1924...

A large watercolor on paper on panel painting of a classical mountain landscape, dated in Chinese 1980 at upper left (and likely signed there, I cannot read calligraphy), the work measuring 32" by 22 1/2" (the entire panel 40 1/2" by 30 1/2" with metal frame, loose/no glass). The artist was obviously familiar with centuries of Chinese classical landscapes. There is light wear in several places but nothing serious. The work is loose within the frame and can be shipped with or without it.

In 1976 Haku Maki did his eight-volume San Mon Ban--a total of 96 different embossed images. These included many items Maki had just used, would use soon and used later. I first show images of two prints like those in San Mon Ban but slightly larger. Then two images of insects in San Mon Ban and then 4 images of insects long hidden in my archives--even to me. These might all be called Maki Lite...

Oil on canvas painting of a desert landscape, 18" by 24" (27" by 34" framed), signed at lower right by the listed California painter AILEEN POWERS STEPHENS (1889-1982). The artist also dedicated it to her daughter Helen, in July 1978, on the occasion of the latter's birthday, in an inscription on the reverse. Stephens was born in Kansas into an artistic family. She was related to the important 19th century American sculptor Hiram Powers...

Mr Chase was a Chicago area painter who was known as a landscape painter of the city of Chicago. He later traveled and painted with other artist known as California Impressionist. Measuring 8” x 10” this work is done in oil on panel and framed in a beautiful gold leaf baroque frame measuring 18.5”x 20”

In his book Daniel Tretiak says: “Maki’s kanji prints were normally of one main color against a white or black background. Poem 71-29 below is an exception—and all the more interesting because of it. In this print, Maki has created an abstract Person—the splashes of color show the head, eyes, shoulder, and two legs.” It measures 8.75in W X 12in H and is no. 73 of an edition of 152.

A fine black and white original photograph, 10 1/4" by 13 1/2" (16" by 20" in metal frame), signed in the mount in pencil by the noted American photographer HENRY E. GILPIN (1922-2011). The work, commonly referred to as "Mount McKinley, Northeast Corner of Wonder Lake, 4:30 AM", is one of the photographer's most popular and best-known images, after "Highway 1, California". The original negative dates to 1978, though this could have been printed later...

An original black ink drawing of a Native American Indian stalking a herd of bison. He hides behind a bush, his bow resting behind him, his fringed arrow quiver at the ready. The drawing is nearly square, at 9 1/2" by 9 1/4" (14 1/4" by 14 1/4" in black simple framing). There is a Reno, Nevada framer's label remaining on the backing, but no other information. I have been unable to match the name to a listed artist. Allow for reflections in a few images.
