Etching featuring a church campanile type tower in an urban setting, signed faintly in the plate on front right corner and signed in pencil in lower right margin "Messick". The print measures 9 1/2" by 7 1/4" inside the existing mat and 13" by 10 1/2" in simple black strip frame. The artist is apparently BENJAMIN MESSICK (1891-1981)...

A charming pastel portrait by Dorothy Colles which was commisioned for a "Trufood" advertizing poster. Dorothy Colles (1917-2003) was, according to an obituary in the Independent newspaper,"gifted in portraits of children". She has exhibited through the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Portrait Painting. There is a water 'splash' above the head of the boy which we have not attempted to restore. Otherwise excellent condition. The picture 19.5 inches by 17.3 inches (49.5cm by 44cm)

The work is very 1940's/1950's in feeling, almost mural-like. Ignatiev escaped Russia for China during the revolution and was in San Francisco by 1923, where he studied with Gleb Ilyin...

There are lots of signed prints out there, but few original works, by the hand of famous comedian RED SKELTON (1913-1997), who is said to have said that he made more money from his art than from his entertainment career. This is one of those scarce original works: a pencil drawing of a bird's head---likely a gull, though, possibly a young eagle...

Judith Shahn was Ben Shahn's daughter. She studied with her father and Moses Soyer. Her work appeared in the New Yorker Magazine, Harpers, The Nation, etc.

Carles was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts between 1900 and 1907. He studied with Thomas Pollock Anshutz, Hugh Breckenridge, Henry McCarter, Cecilia Beaux, and William Merritt Chase. In 1907 he traveled to France where he remained until 1910. In France, he greatly admired the works of Cézanne and Matisse, and became close friends with John Marin and Eduard Steichen...
