Oil on small tabletop, showing a classic old master 17th or 18th century French scene but executed most likely in the late 19th century, 13 1/2" by 23 3/4" and rather heavy for its size, at six pounds. The painting is not signed and I believe it is purely decorative. The legs of the small table were lost long ago. The painting has considerable evidence of wear and age which adds to its charm...

A portrait miniature done by Moses B. Russell and I wish I could say more about this painting or the sitter, but the original backing paper, where Russell signed and often threatened people (incorrectly) not to remove the paper, has been removed. However, the painting was clearly done by Russell and closely mirrors one in the Metropolitan Museum...

Carles was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts between 1900 and 1907. He studied with Thomas Pollock Anshutz, Hugh Breckenridge, Henry McCarter, Cecilia Beaux, and William Merritt Chase. In 1907 he traveled to France where he remained until 1910. In France, he greatly admired the works of Cézanne and Matisse, and became close friends with John Marin and Eduard Steichen...

Pen and ink on paper drawing of three nude women in an interior, 10 1/2" by 7 1/4" inside the mat (18" by 14" as framed), signed at lower right "Michonze" and dated there "58". This is a work of the talented, interesting artist GREGOIRE MICHONZE (known early in life as Michonznic). The artist has displayed his mastery of line as his flickering pen created a work that is possibly a study but which is complete in and of itself...

An example of the etching "The Complete Angler", by the noted English artist credited with creating the so-called "Etching Revival" of the latter 19th century, FRANCIS SEYMOUR-HADEN (1818-1910). The print is signed in the plate and lower right and dated there 1877, but was likely printed in the year 1880, in an edition of 1000.
