An etching with extensive watercolor depicting two arches of an old bridge with a house built on the pier between the arches, two men in red coats and a dog on the bank below the bridge and lane with trees and houses on the right. Titled along the lower margin to the left, “Part of the Old Bridge east Shrewsbury.” It is unsigned, but part of the old mount that is saved in a folder on the back of the present mount states that it is by Paul Sandby (British 1725-1809)...
A drawing with ink, pencil, watercolor and gouache on laid paper depicting a harbor scene very much in the manner of the French artist Claude Vernet (1714-1789). Perhaps there is a print source for this drawing. The work is signed in the lower right, “Tho. Ryves. 1770.” The most likely artist is either the father Thomas Ryves (1721-1788) or his son Thomas (born 1753) from the distinguished Dorset, England family...
Contemporary Japanese limited edition etching titled “March” by Ryoko Hirone depicting a woman seated before a glass window drinking a cup of tea and staring at the city scene outside. Birds fly past, a calendar for March hangs on the wall, and her dog is beside her. Pencil-signed, titled, and numbered 10/30 in the lower margin. Paper size 28 1/2" x 21 1/2" (plate: 23 1/4" x 19 1/4"). Very good overall condition. There is some wrinkling of the heavy paper at the large margin corners...
Extra large format limited edition Japanese woodblock print depicting a flower lined deserted lane beside traditional buildings under a cloudy blue sky by Katsuyuki Nishijima (b. 1945) dated 1987. This is an original pencil-signed artist's proof (marked A.P. in the lower left margin) for an image that was likely produced in a limited edition of 100. The pencil-title appears to translate "Empty Sky" or "Deserted Day." Paper size 24 1/4" x 18 1/4" (image: 15 3/8" x 21 1/4"). Full margins...
TWO lithograph (or other process) prints, 1958, "Village de la Sarthe" and "Le Village d'Herouville", each 8 3/4" by 10" inside the mat, and 14" by 15 3/4" framed, numbered 34/100 and 33/100 respectively at lower left margin and each pencil signed at right, after the originals by the famous and important French modern artist MAURICE de VLAMINCK (1876-1958). Vlaminck is known as one of the founders of the Fauvist movement, and later as an expressionist...
This appears to be an original painting on silk, circa 1960's or 1970's, 15" by 17 1/4" framed, Chinese calligraphy and red seal at left. I say "appears" because there is a Windsor Art Products label on the reverse, suggesting this would be a print or multiple of some type. Having examined it very closely, however, it does still look to me like original work, and not a silkscreen. I believe that original work was sold by Windsor, it having paid artists to create art in bulk...
Beautiful Jadeite Standing Quanyin on lotus throne holding apple green colored branch of Peaches and holding upright lotus with two devotee attendants and bamboo grove, with light celadon green jade and outer edges of moss green...
A group of three engravings probably by Johannas and Raphael Sadeler of Christian anchorites or hermits. The prints are after Maartin De Vos. These images were widely circulated in the early 17th century and printed and re-engraved by engravers other than the Sadelers. Interestingly of the three in this group two have no title, though they are trimmed right to the image and perhaps the title was removed...
Lithograph on paper, 15 3/4" by 11 1/2", titled on reverse original Associated American Artists label "Mexican Girl", pencil signed at lower right by the listed Mexican artist IGNACIO AGUIRRE(1900-1990). Aguirre was a painter and graphic artist, who produced this work in cooperation with the Associated American Artists at mid century. He was a member of the prestigious Taller de Grafica Popular, perhaps the premier graphic artists group in Mexico in the middle years of the 20th century...
This is a very fine, classical early drawing, 5 1/8" by 8 5/8" (12" by 15 3/4" in attractive ornate gold leaf frame), not dated but likely dating to the 1830's through 1850 or so, signed at lower center by the artist "Loisel". The drawing, executed in pen, watercolor, and gum arabic highlighting in the trees and the low bank in center, is in excellent fresh condition, belying its age...
A 12" by 16" vintage oil on Masonite work, (18 3/4" by 23" **in DAMAGED frame, not shown**), signed at lower left corner by well listed American artist LEONARD C. LANE (1910-1978). The painting is titled on old reverse label "Lighthouse at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia". The circa 1950's label is from The Little Gallery, Jupiter Inlet Beach Colony, Jupiter Island, Florida...
Impressive oil on canvas painting of a mountainous European lake landscape with historic ancient buildings reflected in the waters, signed at lower left G. PATTY. Photos of internationally famous Lake Como in northern Italy certainly resemble this scene. The uncommonly beautiful work, 26" by 32" (34" by 39" in much later, mid century frame), is painted in predominant blues, greens, and whites. The impressionistic handling suggests a very talented artist, yet, I am unable to locate a painter of...
Fine pencil drawing, possibly illustrator art, of a traditional old doorway in New England or elsewhere in the east, 10 1/2" by 7 1/2" inside the mat, 17" by 13 1/2" framed. There are a few listed artists by this name Don Browne (possibly "Browne"----there might be a fainter version underneath) but I don't believe this to be by one of them, though the work is competently executed. The drawing is in clean, fine condition.
Circa 1960's drip painting on paper, 22 1/2" by 18", unsigned, mounted to a thin board. This is not a Jackson Pollock or Sam Francis, but it is a work of art and it has age. The thin paper is glued down at least at the edges and possibly in the center as well. The paper is browned where it has been under the mat for many years, (about 1 3/4" to about 1/2") and there is puckering where the paper has been glued. There is actually a 1 1/2" long hole visible in the composition near the dark blue...
PAIR of decorative oil on board paintings executed circa 1970, in the classical style of the 17th or 18th century, each 6 3/4" by 5" (12" by 10" in the frames), each signed "H. Muriel". The paintings are affordable and will nicely fill that small wall in need of some art. Frames have the slightest of wear, the paintings are in excellent shape.
A trio of drawings I have owned for about thirty years---all unsigned, one on tracing paper, the other on heavier paper, and double-sided, the subject apparently Indian Rock, a favorite subject of artists since the 19th century when they visited the Naragansett Bay area of Rhode Island. Perhaps the most famous of the artists who specialized in these scenes was William Stanley Haseltine (1835-1900); his oil paintings of this subject have exceeded $500,000. When I acquired these decades ago in S...
THREE unframed/unstretched oil sketches of California landscapes, circa 1930's to 1940's, measurements 11" by 14", 14" by 17", and 18" by 13 1/2", one signed at lower right by listed Southern California artist BERTHA TOWNSEND COLER (1865-1948). Coler was born in Ohio and studied with Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase in New York City. By 1928 she had moved to Santa Monica, California and for the next two decades was a prolific painter in watercolor and oil, concentrating on portraits and s...
A pretty watercolor of a lakeshore, titled on backing "Reservoir Cristaline/France", signed at lower right illegibly and dated 1959. The work measures 12" by 15 1/4" inside the mat and 21" by 24" in a gold frame. The signature reads something like "B N Fleur" or "Fleury" but to date despite considerable efforts in that direction, I have not been able to identify the obviously talented artist. Watercolor is in excellent condition, frame has wear, especially on bottom and right sides. Allow fo...
