Works by ALBERT HORATIO SLADE (1843-1922) are quite rare in the marketplace. The few that have come to auction feature coastal scenes of Los Angeles, San Diego and Ventura Counties. Prices of $8,000 and even $12,000 have been achieved on several larger works that are site-specific. Some are of great historical interest, as they document early buildings and communities. Slade was born in England and had a photography studio in Toronto, Canada by 1879. He was in San Diego by 1887...

Oil on canvas still life of peaches and compote in the East Coast style of the latter part of the 19th century, 21" by 27", presently unframed, signed at lower left "C H Harmon" and dated what appears to be 1880 (or, 1880 something, difficult to read last digit). This is a skillfully painted still life in the tradition of eastern masters like the Ream's, or members of the so-called Fall River School. The table appears to be Eastlake Victorian, with its marble top...

Watercolor en grisaille drawing of the ornate entry area of a 19th century American home, complete with trellis, shutters, clapboard and fine woodwork, unsigned, measuring 18" by 14" (20 1/2" by 16 7/8" framed in brown wood frame. There is also a pencil study of the doorway on the reverse (see last photo). Any number of artists could have created this. It reminds me of a home you'd see in a watercolor by Edward Lamson Henry. I'd date this to about 1910 through 1930...

For the eclectic collector of 19th century American folk art, this is an oil on canvas, as framed in the original gilt, measuring 26 1/2" by 37 1/2" overall. The work was purchased in coastal Maine, where it came directly out of an old farmhouse near Nobleboro. It had been the property of one family there for decades. From a folk art Americana standpoint, it is a most interesting and unusual work indeed...

A wonderful pair of miniature portraits of two young near identical twin boys, painted on organic material. Although it might often be a decent bet that any attractive English portraits of young children done in this time period were by William Egley (joking, sort of) I cannot, in good conscience, make that attribution, so the artist will, at least for now, remain unidentified.

Possibly Scottish, and in excellent condition, each portrait has a sight size of 1 7/8" by 1 1/2"...

Fine decorative 19th century engraving print, titled at bottom margin "Philadelphia from Belmont (WEST PARK)", by English-born artist ROBERT HINSHELWOOD (1812-1879). Hinshelwood came to the United States in 1835 as a young man and pursued his art skills, in both painting and engraving. In this case he seems to have engraved after his own original painting---a fairly rare skill combination. The French fashion and costume magazine "La Mode Illustree" operated from about 1859 through at least the 1920's, featuring the styles of the day. This is a fine engraving, circa 1875 or 1880, judging from the fashion depicted. It is hand colored. Size as framed is 13 1/2" by 9 1/2". The framing though narrow is an interesting design. The print has some overall light browning/aging as would be expected of paper of this age---but it is even and not at all obtrusive. It would make for a plea...

A lovely hand colored scene, "City of Providence", engraved by listed American 19th century artist ASA COOLIDGE WARREN (1819-1904) after an apparent painting by artist R.
