In 1971 Haku Maki Japanese Master print-maker was at the height of his creative powers. He had already done several “big” prints and turned his skills to producing dramatic prints. This Big Blue was one. It depicts a war instrument, a halberd. Maki created this design so that it showed how the character was written. He showed us how the stroke order flowed on a woodblock print...

Francoise Gall, french, 1912-1987. This wonderful beach scene is Francoise Gall at his best. It is oil on canvas, 16 1/8" L by 9.5" H in a beautiful 20th C gold leaf frame with outer dimensions of 22 6/8" L by 16 1/8" H. It is signed lower right and is in good condition. His paintings sell for up to $50,000 at auction.

This print is 13 inches wide x 20 75 tall. it is a spectacular Big Blue. The kanji reads words to the effect Give an inch, take a mile. Maki produced this print in 1971. It is number30 of 105.

Haku Maki did quite a number of prints using persimmon as a main theme Probably well over 100 He also began doing prints with ceramics around 1980 He probably did more than 100 ceramics theme prints. But the two there only came together in the persimmon and blue vase print shown here (and in an equally rare one with a persimmon and a strikingly beautiful yellow vase also shown here)...

Japanese limited edition sosaku hanga “kappa-ban” (stencil print) by Yoshitoshi Mori (1898-1992) titled “Hasami” (variously translated as “Scissors” or “Nail Clipper”). The print is pencil-signed “Y. Mori” at the lower left, dated ’79, and numbered 24/50. The artist’s red seal is above the signature. Oil on canvas painting of a classic red barn in Alaska's Matanuska Valley near Anchorage, signed at lower left by artist Ted Goldstone and dated 3/69 and titled on stretcher. The Matanuska Valley is known as Alaska's prime agricultural area. The long hours of daylight in summer have produced record cabbages, among other produce. The high surrounding mountains remind one that one is in Alaska and not the Midwest. The art measures 16" by 12".

Poem S B. This small and unpretentious print was a sleeper. Whoever sold it knew not what he had. Indeed neither did I until well after it came here to Beijing. It is a very rare 1968 Maki print. Not 1967 and not 1969. It has the kanji for Rope in the center and that is placed on a subtle but firmly done kanji for STONE - but the kanji is in there ass backwards. The correct rendering is in image 5. Mysteries abound.I have never seen the sub-title SB in a Maki print...

Poem 69-13 is an old embossed print. Created in 1969, it is in excellent condition. It measures 11 1/8in W x 15in H and is number 61 of an edition of 82.

This is a lithograph, apparently signed in the plate only, by the noted American artist RAPHAEL SOYER (1899-1987). Soyer, one of several brothers who became significant figures in American art during the WPA and mid century period, became known for his sensitive studies of human figures in urban settings and interiors. Maki’s earliest works were done in the late 1950s and remained rather unknown until the late 1960s. He first started producing prints using red ink in 1965 and this is probably the first example. It is also what I call a Big Red. It is very abstract and it fills up the whole sheet. Maki wanted his prints to have balance. This has it: the red field is pierced by three blue squares: two on the left side of the orange meteor-like strokes, and one on the right side. The field is composed of small...

In the period 1966-67, Haku Maki did two large series with Song as the theme. There was Flower Song, a series of 10 prints. And there was Animal Song which was Maki’s Asian Zodiac series, with 12 images. It was also a small series with small editions--50 in the case of Animal Song (released in Kyoto, so very hard to find: only one friend has the full set), I do not know who has the full set of Flower Song. Equally rare is Moon Song. Many years ago I saw Moon Song 1 and did not buy it...

Poem 70-73 Taiwa (Level or peace), 31/106, 17.5”x 24.5”. Haku Maki produced this Big Green print in 1970. His Big prints-—large for him-—appeared mainly in the period 1968-75. This print, the only horizontal one of all his Big prints, depicts the kanji for Level, Peace and the like. I believe it has other meanings. When I first saw this image many years ago but had not seen the bottom margin clearly, I thought it was a stylized rendition of Woman, a very frequent Maki subject....

Poem 68-40—strongly related to Poem 69-13 which is posted below on this site—is an old embossed print. Created in 1968, a year before its “cousin,” it is similarly in excellent condition. Poem 68-40 measures 11 3/8in W x 15in H and is number 29 of an edition of 72.
