Kuba figure, a workshop piece from ca. 1920-1940.
This sculpture is typical for the Ecole de Mushengé. This was a school for crafts in the Kuba capital founded by Belgian missionaries, the Josephite fathers from Ghent. The numbers at the bottom confirm this. It represents a nobleman. H. 27 cm.

Provenance: a Dutch family by descend from their grandparents who lived in Congo.
Old mask with a severe appearance. The position of the orbits is asymmetrical, the nose is long and tapered. The mouth is small open showing small carved teeth. The inner crving is clean and symmetrical with a cavity for the dancer's nose. The ears are sculpted and large in size. The holes for the passage of the carrying links are of conical sizes, certainly indicating that they were made using the technique of the reddened steel nail...
Rare Japanese limited edition sosaku hanga woodblock print by Shizuma Uchida (1906-2001) titled "Chichibu Mountainous Region." The title and signature of the artist are in black ink at the lower right with the artist's red seal below. The bottom margin is pencil-signed "S. Uchida," titled in kanji, and numbered 6/20. Paper: 11 1/2" x 14 3/4" (image: 10 1/2" x 14"). This image is undated, but the artist was known to have been active as a printmaker in the 1930s. Very good overall condition...

4 sheets of Chiyo-gami with autumn leaves designs which are woodblock prints. The paper is washi, a handmade paper made from mulberry fiber. Chiyo-gami was originated in Kyoto and developed in Edo later. It was used for paper dolls and paper crafts. Generally the larger one is the older.

A small metal box which contains an ink stone to grind ink sticks for writing. The box has been cast in brass and has a copper bottom. The ink stone is secured in the lid with a spring frame. The top of the box shows an engraved landscape design with a scholar figure and a hut. By all appearances the box has not been used as it does not show ink stains, and it still has a new looking, temporary, six sided factory mark inside.
