The calligraphy states that it was composed on the occasion of a 1978 memorial ceremony to Kim Koo (1876 - 1949), the leader of the independence movement during Japan's occupation of Korea. Vintage Folk Art Chinese silk doily embroidered with good luck symbols of butterflies and bats and a centered peony, framed in a black linen border with gray silk binding in period shades of green, purple and hot pink, natural linen backing, easily opens to make a pillow if desired. Size: 13 1/2" x 9 1/4". Pretty design and soft colors, embroidery in fine condition; freyed binding and moderate run of thread colors on silk.

Lovely antique silk Chinese panel embroidered with metallic wires framing flowers and butterflies in jewel tones of purple, blue, raspberry, and gold, natural linen backing, black silk border, easily opens to make a pillow if desired. Size: 12 1/4" x 8 1/4". Condition is good overall. Loose metallic wires, border seams need re-stitching, some loose embroidery threads.

From our Southeast Asia Collection, a superb Indonesian ebony wood carving of Ruana, expertly rendered with such animation and ferocity that the character looks almost demon-like, so much so that we actually find this particular piece a bit creepy.....But that is ultimately testimony to the tremendous skill of the carver...

This Chinese ivory carving of an open clam is a mid 20th century product. There are nine people resting, walking or sitting on a cart inside the clam. They are surrounded by pine trees. Originally, this was a Japanese theme concerning the “dreams of a clam.” Later, the Chinese adopted this clever design. There are some sea creatures sitting on the top of the clam. It is 2” high (with a carved hard wood base is 2 ¾” high), 4” wide and 2 ¼” thick. It is in excellent condition...

The reverse side contains sutra writings in Burmese script, not yet translated...
