Japanese vase of convex shape, Totai decoration of a bird and a butterfly among leaves and berry bushes. The motif created by thin metal threads is filled in with colored lacquer and polished. The brown lacquer background is carved as to resemble tree bark (totai). This complicated technique for decoration on porcelain was in use in Japan in the 1920’s and 30’s.The base with old paper label, indistinct letters in blue and the word “Lacquer”. Early 20th century hand carved kava bowl, Tonga or Fiji, with four tapered round legs, and a stylized head on one side with holes for attaching a cord for hanging, very deep and satiny patina, chisel marks over much of the surface, hard wood with nice figural elements. Within the culture it is referred to as a tanoa. Measures 14 3/4" across and is 5 3/4" high...

Marine material netsuke of an owl sitting on a tree stump with new branches and leaves. Excellent quality detailed carving, wonderful face with somewhat puzzled expression, beautiful depiction of differentiated feathers, pleasant patina, eyes are inlaid with black horn. Signed MASAMITSU on the bottom, wonderful netsuke by a master carver. Height 1 5/8 inches.

The fine crackled feldspar glazing of this Hagi composition contrasts nicely with the red ferrous clay of the base and the wrought silver globe resting atop. Along the lower half can be seen a geometric windowed pattern giving this incense burner a sense of dimensionality.

Legendary potter Miwa Kyuwa (1885-1981) has been credited with reviving the Hagi tradition of pottery after the war...

This circular jade (nephrite) pendant (or plaque) is 2 ¾” in diameter and 3/16” thick. It is a late 19th century product. It is carved on both sides and depicts a young boy holding a court tablet “Hu.” The boy is riding on a dragon headed carp and is surrounded by lucky clouds. Chinese Guqin shaped Ink Cake or stick with gilt 5 claw dragon highlights , inscriptions running down each side. Great condition and large at 12.5" by 4.25" Period unknown.

This elderly man with a smiling face is 8” high (with the hard wood base, it is 9” high), 1 ¾” wide and 1” thick. It is a mid-20th century product. The bearded man wears an old style short robe and pants. His right hand is holding a straw bag and a wooden tobacco pipe; his left hand is holding a long bamboo staff. It is in great condition.

Antique Japanese firman's jacket, hakeshibanten, cotton indigo dyed with sashiko stitching and freehand paste resist decoration (tsutsugaki). Middle back of jacket with round mon holding the red colored hiragana character "ha". Even wear overall.
