A fantastic maki-e vase by greatest Heian Zohiko Nishimura Hikobei VIII in great condition. It was made around 1950. An alloyed copper inner tray is also included.

Hikobei VIII(1886~1965) delved heavily into laquerware technology, creating a vast array of well-known works from the end of the Meiji period through the early Showa period.

His works were featured in world expositions as well as in national industrial fairs, winning prizes along the way...

This saye gosha (or segusha) shows the dynamic use of line and vivid color for which Uzbek Lakai embroidery is famous. Saye gosha are V-shaped hangings used to decorate piles of quilts while in storage during the day in the yurt. The Lakai are an Uzbek tribe who currently live around Kunduz in northern Afghanistan. 10 Japanese Lacquer covered bowls with beautiful sprays of Chrysanthemums in gold and red colors continued from the top cover to the side of the bowl, 3 1/2" high with top on, 4 3/4" diameter-rim, gold painted wavy flowing water design under the cover. The condition is good, no damages.

From Ibaden, Nigeria this traditional Yoruba cloth was woven by the men of the village. It was worn tied around the waist of the woman, and used as a baby carrier. This piece was brought back from Africa in 1961. Hand loomed of cotton fibers, it has a wonderful soft color and texture. It measures 10" wide and 68" long including fringe.

Vintage Japanese glass obidome (sash ornament) with domed top and differently colored concentric circles resembling an eye of a fish. Obidome is worn on an obi cord that holds the obi sash together, it is the only type of jewelry worn by Japanese women on formal occasions, and could serve as netsuke as well. Clever design, excellent quality glasswork, very pleasant to hold. Metal fixture with two loops on the back for an obi cord. Diameter 1.54 inches.

A vintage Japanese Tansu called Honbako (book chest) made of dark stained Momiji (Maple) and Tochinoki (Horse Chestnut) woods with an interior made of Kiri (Paulownia). Single hinged door secures a spacious area where books were kept and 5 filing drawers where flats and documents were stored. Below the door is one large drawer where valuables were kept. All original bronze hardware.
