Large Chinese Qing dynasty porcelain bowl decorated on the exterior wall with stylized forms thinly washed in deep blue-gray over a celadon-gray crackled ground. The interior is unglazed at the center where another bowl was stacked in the kiln. This bowl was probably produced by a Fujian kiln for export to Southeast Asia. 9 3/8” diameter x 3 3/8” high. 19th century. A finely painted 19th C Japanese porcelain Hirado mizusashi used in tea ceremony to hold water. In excellent condition, it measures 5 inches high by 4" diameter.

Low tea bowl of irregular round shape. Raku-yaki with red glaze, decorated with black brushed-on spots and white patches, with fine crackle over all. Inside the foot a small area is left uncovered. Japan, Edo period, early 19th century.

This is a finely carved 19th century Japanese Netsuke depicting a Standing Samurai, wearing a typical caped robe, who is holding a box with both hands. Stained for effect; rich patina. Unsigned. Netsuke measures 0.76 inches (2.0cm), and 1.47 inches (3.8cm) tall. Netsuke is in excellent condition, as may be seen in the posted photos.

An elegant and fine ink-stone (Shezhou, Anhui) made of carved, dark schist with minor, green-brown inclusions. One “eye.” Two small feet at top end. Fitted and finely carved lid of chicken wing wood (jichimu). The inscription reads: “A treasure from the Zhishi shanfang.” In a Japanese box from the 19th century (with full inscription). China: Qing, probably 18th cent. L 16,5 cm, W 11 cm. Condition: Excellent (small chip in ink-well).

A rare huanghuali wood Chinese "violin" called an erhu. The main body and neck are carved from a single piece of huanghuali wood, its top stretched with snake skin of beautiful patterning. The bottom of the main body has a sound hole with an openwork carving of a stylized "shou" character meaning longevity (this bottom panel is a separate piece of huanghuali)...

19th century Chinese scholar’s root wood brush rest / scholar’s rock giving a perfect impression of a craggy mountain range with numerous crevices. Did not photograph well - photos came out too harsh. Wonderful object conveying the power of the mountains. Natural root of a tree with old cracks, nicks and scratches adding to the wild energy of the piece. Beautiful patina, powerful piece for a scholar’s table. Length 5 1/4 inches, height 2 1/4 inches.

There are a total of eight signs, each with a different "saying" having to do with well wishes. Due to the age of the calligraphy, and the vagueres of the old Chinese language, accurate translations have not been possible for each sign. Each sign is carved out of wood with raised wooden characters and inlayed with MOP flakes. Each is 21 inches tall and roughly 4.5 inches wide. 19th century Asakusa school stag antler netsuke of a seated tanuki (badger) with its enormous belly, an inscribed sake bottle in one paw, an accounting book in the other. In Japanese folklore tanuki is a notorious trickster: it drums with his paws on its large belly (tanuki no hara tsuzumi), imitating the sounding of gongs in temples and inns, and leading tired travelers astray in the darkness. Judging by the book in its paw, this time tanuki acts as a sake vendor...

A Persian small brass or bronze box and lid from the Qajar period, 19th century. Of square shape with indented corners and exquisitely engraved with flowers and birds. A small circular reserve indicates which side of box and lid respectively are meant to fit into each other. Width "2 1/2 / 6.5 cm, height "1 2/3/ 4.2 cm. Condition: fine.

This is a nice piece of cobalt blue glazed scholar’s brush stand. It has three mountains with scene of the “Hai Ma” flying amidst the ocean waves on both side of the stand. Circa. 19th century.

A Japanese boxwood netsuke depicting Shojo crouched in a typical posture, with his hand resting on his knee, while sleeping from the effects of too much sake, the kimono is finely carved with geometric motifs as well as the long hair on the back. A very unusual and extremely rare ink cake in the form of a crouching dog, circa 1800. From its underside you see evidence that the ink cake was hand molded, what is even more remarkable is that this is a white ink cake, and most likely would have been used in special paintings of the scholar class. 19th century Japanese Asakusa school staghorn kiseruzutsu - tobacco pipe case - carved with a mountainous landscape and figures of Kanzan reading an open scroll and Jittoku leaning on his broom. According to a legend, Kanzan and Jittoku lived in a kitchen of a Chinese Zen Buddhist monastery and talked nonsensical language, which some took as a sign of them being enlightened. Very clever carving incorporating outer texture of the antler and porous nature of its center as elements of design...

19th century wooden netsuke of two frogs frolicking on differently sized peony buds with stems. Wonderfull quality carving (see finely incised petals texture) carved, very beautiful warm patina. Signed GYOKUSEKI on the bottom - there is Gyokuseki listed on p. 428 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, but this is much better quality carving than his usual work, probably a different carver with the same name. This late 19th century Chinese carved bamboo arm rest is 6 ¾ inches long and 2 ¼ inches wide. It depicts an autumn scene; three frogs resting behind lotus leaf and dry lotus pod. The poem on the top translate as: “When crabs are growing to maturity and yellow mums are withering away, I am drinking wine beneath a blue autumn sky.” The workmanship of the picture and calligraphy are just elegant. It has nice patina and is in excellent condition.
