Edo Period Japanese woodblock print triptych by Kunisada (also known as Toyokuni III) depicting actors portraying a scene from the kabuki theater. Published by Yamazakiya Seishichi in 1855. Each panel bears the signature "Toyokuni ga" in a red cartouche with yellow snow, a publisher's seal, date seal, and censor's seal (see enlargement 5). An actor in street attire standing in front of a row of shops and tea houses by Osaka artist Sadahiro (active 1830-1851) dating circa 1845. A pupil of Kunisada, Sadahiro's woodblock prints were published in Osaka in the 1830's and 1840's. The seal of the publisher Iseya Sensaburo appears on the actor's head. The artist's signature is in black ink at the lower left. Exceptional color and impression with lacquer highlights on the edge of the inner kimono and mica in the background...

Beautiful antique red-toned bamboo brush holder from China with intricate carvings of various scenes including cherry blossom trees, a man leading a horse, two beautiful maidens shyly conversing with a young gentleman, an older man admiring the scenery through his window, and kanji reading "carved in the year of the tiger by San Miao". Beautiful 19th Century Chinese wooden vanity mirror finely inlaid with Mother of Pearl. The mirror itself can be separately adjusted by tilting back and forth and the position of the 2 feet can also be adjusted by rotating. Condition good. Size: H. 16" (41 cm.) x W. 6" (20 cm.)

Japanese woodblock print depicting an actor portraying a seated samurai. The image is signed at the left side "Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga" (1797-1861). The red Yoshi Kiri seal is beneath the signature. The print was published by Ibaya Senzaburo between 1847-1848. The paper measures 14 1/2"V x 9 7/8"H. It is most likely a panel from a triptych. Very good overall condition with excellent color. 19th century Chinese scholar’s burl wood belt buckle with a dragon head finial looking at her cub crawling over her belly. Could have been used as a brush rest. Wonderful quality carving, beautiful rhythm to the movement of the cub’s body. Excellent quality burl wood with subtle play of shades of brown, great wear and patina, very pleasant feel of age. Excellent object for a scholar’s desk. Length 4.24 inches.

19th century Chinese scholar’s bronze seal, its top in a form of a sage riding on the back of a qilin. According to Chinese mythology qilin appears before the imminent arrival or passing of a sage or illustrious ruler. The impression of the seal is shown on the first photo (image is flipped left to right to present the image as it will print on paper). Nicely cast and finished, beautiful patina, has good presence. Height 1.67 inches, base 1.27 x 1.16 inches.

Description: Fine antique Persian copper bowl, late Quajar period, a band of engraved Persian poem from poet Hafez fallowed by geometrical design. On the base a horse in sitting position with a bird with open wings on the horse's back. This type of bowls was carried by people so every individual had his own bowl and was used for drinking water or wine. Measurements: 1 inches high and 3 3/8 inches in diameter in good condition. For a similar example, see Christie's, April 24, 1990.

The motif of an elephant with a vase on its back has an auspicious meaning of "peaceful times (taiping youxiang 太平有象 - when there is peace, there are signs)". This motif was popular in Qing Dynasty, we date this one to 19th century. The elephant is in perfect condition. Length:9-1/2"; height: 9-1/2".
