Made out of shakudo (alloy of copper and gold) with characteristic black patination resembling lacquer. Excellent quality work, in great condition. This is a finely carved 19th Century rectangular Manju netsuke depicting the Two Sennin kanzan and Jittoku, who are standing and holding a large ball. The two sennin are brothers, and are Usually Represented as juveniles with the faces of old age. 19th century staghorn netsuke of seated Kikujido - the Chrysanthemum Boy - with a chrysanthemum flower by his shoulder. Kikujido was a favorite page of the Emperor, but was condemned to exile. The Emperor taught Kikujido a sentence by Buddha to thank him for his loyalty. Kikujido left and settled in a valley full of chrysanthemums, and spent his days writing the phrase on the petals so he would not forget it. Nice carving, good face, excellent patina, great feel of age...

A fine and expressive carved stag horn netsuke of Shoki, The Demon Queller. Early 19th century.

Shoki is the Japanese styling of the Chinese spirit Chung Kui who protects households from malevolent demons. In this example the gifted carver shows Shoki studying closely, an off stage, mischievous oni whilst carefully hiding his Chinese sword close to his body.

19th century or earlier Japanese sword set of fuchi (bordering piece between the sword guard and the handle) and kashira (metal pommel at the end of the hilt of a sword) with gilded relief design of small birds in flight by clumps of bamboo, all on finely punched ground texture called nanako, which means “fish-eggs” as it resembles fine rows of caviar. Excellent quality work, in great condition. Kashira length 1.4 inches, fuchi length 1.52 inches.

A pair of antique Japanese candlesticks dating to the Meiji period 1868-1911. The stands are made of copper and measure about 17 1/2" tall x 5 1/2" in diameter, across the weighted bottoms. The stands have been engraved with an assortment of family mons, both on the bases, and up the sticks. The condition is very good. There are no dents or broken pieces, and a dark patina has developed over the years. The asking price includes shipment within the USA.

19th century marine material ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) in ball shape carved in medium relief with a kneeling maid presenting a gift to a standing samurai armed with a sword, long bow and quiver with arrows, all under a pine tree and with a thatched roof hut and a woven fence on the background. A Fukagawa nine inch sauce boat and underplate fired on in the kiln. Iris decoration from Chuji Fukagawa's own 19th century design book. Blue underglaze and red, yellow and gold overglaze enamel decoration. Mt. Fuji mark in oxidized cobalt blue on the unglazed, flat foot of the undertray. Late Meiji or early Taisho. Good condition. Japanese Meiji period barrel form cloisonne enamel vase with three panels decorated in butterflies, flowers, and birds set against a powder blue ground. The cartouches are placed against a brown background covered in dense abstract and floral patterns. There is green counter enamel on the base and interior. Late 19th century to 1920s good size Japanese sterling silver and copper cigarette case with inlaid and carved landscape of snow covered Mount Fuji rising above clouds, and a wide bay with rocks, pines, huts and sailing boat boats, with design continuing on the back of the case.
