A splendid and unusually large tetsubin decorated with geometric patterns with peonies and butterflies set within a frame. This piece is a collaboration of two major artists. The body has a seal by the kama-shi or tea kettle maker, Okuni Jurou, and the lid is signed by Kinryudo. Okuni Jurou, along with his father Okuni Toubei were famous for their skill and artistry during the Meiji and Taisho Periods. Condition is original and excellent. Size: Diameter 9.5" Height 14"

The mask is of dark brown russet lacquer finish and the interior is smoothed lacquered red. The high jaw his two protrusion hooks for strapping the cords, underneath the chin is a vent hole. The mask is fitted with yodare kare of three row of false scale lace and blue silk.

This late 19th or early 20th century lacquered bronze statue of a boy is 8 ¾ inches high, 4 inches wide and 2 ½ inches thick. It has a signature “Mantoshi” on the back. Aside from some wear due to its age, it is in good condition.

Rare Bamboo and Bamboo Root Antique Japanese Fishing Pole converts to a Cane carved with a playful Monkey and Snake and auspicious symbols. The 35 inch ((89cm) walking stick extends to an 83 inch (211cm) fishing pole! A unique find for the collector of Japanese art.

Waraji (straw sandal) Gata (mold). This mold was used to make the straw sandals worn by farmers. It is of solid carved wood. L. 50cm(19.75") x H.9cm(3.5") x W.9cm(3.5"). Acquired in Yamagata Prefecture in NE Japan (Tohoku), this piece exhibits the wonderful folk qualities of the region. Hung vertically, the "shelf" portion of the mold can hold a small flower vase, creating a lovely "wabi" arrangement for the tokonoma.

Naturalistic crayfish made of copper from the Meiji period, 1868 -1912. The piece is unusual in that the legs, antennae, and tail move in the same way that a real crayfish moves. It is signed Shinju on the base of the body. It measures 6" long.

A fine Imari bowl and cover decorated with a pattern composed of Autumn flowers, akikusa de, and Banded hedges, shibagaki. A wheel cut Johanneum inventory number incised to the interior of the foot-ring of the bowl indicating that it belonged to the collection of Augustus the Strong, and was acquired before 1722. A simple utilitarian tool often used by Japanese carpenters and woodworkers known as a sumitsubo or an ink pot used to measure and portion pieces of wood. A good example of a late 17th century Arita round bodied jug or wine ewer decorated with three lobed panels each with Peonies inset in a simplified Karakusa ground with additional scroll work to the shoulder and neck of the jug incorporating further floral motifs.
