In the foreground, men water their horses before ascending the narrow mountain trail. There is a beautiful sense of whimsy conveyed in the group of horse and men as they wade in the mountain stream in the shade of weeping willows. Far in the distance, the mountain range disappears in the mist. Painted in sumi ink on paper. Signed and with a large chop seal...

Japanese silk obi, Nagoya style, dyed with the design of Chinese Empress and court attendants in the bamboo grove. It appears that this was converted to current Nagoya style obi (from kimono?). The design of this obi is unique. The wide and narrow area of this obi has different designs on both sides and all seams appear clean. By taking one side of the seam apart, you have a large fabric to work with (double in size with one seam in the center)...

Late Meiji period (1890s 1912) Japanese lacquered kushi (hair comb) with painted and inlaid decoration of a magpie among various flowers, design continuing on both side. Beautiful work in Japanese taste, in great vintage condition. Length 3.8 inches. Part of East Coast collection of Japanese hair items.

A very well painted and delightful Kutani tea caddy, perfect condition and has its original inner cap lid still intact also in perfect condition. It measures 11 cm (4.3 inches) high and dates pre-1920, circa 1912-15.

DESCRIPTION: A large and fabulous Sumida Gawa tankard with an unglazed body, graceful handle, and figures of a man and small boy in very high relief. A thick, flowing flambe' glaze in blues and brown coats the mouth and runs down the body and handle in thick drips. Fine attention to detail has been paid to the handmade figures of a seated man with a cane facing a young boy, both supported by craggy rockwork ledges...

Rare Japanese kakiemon ware porcelain jar. Of a tapered melon shape, with circular floral enso motifs of bamboo, blossoming cherry branches, hydrangea, kiri leaves. The Imperial dragon and phoenix paired to represent the emperor and empress. With overglaze green, red, and blue on white bisque ground. The domed lid topped with karakusa (octopus vine) and kiri leaf pattern.

Late Meiji period (1890s 1912) Japanese buffalo horn kushi (hair comb) with carved and gold lacquered decoration of flowers with shoots and leaves with fine tiny green mother-of pears pieces, design continuing on both sides. Signed GYOKUZAN on the front. Superbly made, crisp carving, excellent lacquering, wonderful work in Japanese taste, in great condition (tiny bit of insect damage on the teeth as seen on Enlargement 6). Length 3.3 inches...

The early 20th century celluloid netsuke is 2 1/8” in diameter and 5/8” thick. This kind of netsuke is called “Kagamibuta.” It is shaped like a Manju (round doughnut) but with a metal disc serving as a lid to a shallow bowl. The pressed silver alloy disc has a dragon design. It is in excellent condition.

A large and very attractive vase by Taizan, delicately painted in coloured enamels and gilding with two continuous fields of decoration, the neck with irises above a cloud band of floral trellis pattern, a swathe of scrolling foliage between formal borders. The base signed Dai Nihon Taizan sei and impressed Taizan.
