Late Meiji period (1890s to 1912) Japanese wooden kushi (hair comb) with colored and gold lacquer decoration of a bird in flight against a crescent moon among stylized clouds. Beautifully made out of dense wood allowing for fine teeth, very good lacquering, wonderful work in Japanese taste, wear and loss as can be seen on photos. Length 4.05 inches.

Japanese antique tetsubin (kettle for heating water for tea), made of cast iron, dramatic and very three dimensional design of a dragon in swirling waves, highly raised with wonderful detail, bronze lid with lotus pod. Meiji Period c1900. Size: 9" high including handle x 7 1/2" wide including spout.

Thick cotton, Katazome stencil dye, aizome Japanese indigo dye with beni flowers. 70 1/2" x 13". The width changes to 12 1/2 after 39 1/2" where the fabric is torn. One 1/2" round stain (at 20 inches from torn end). Weakened at the seam (visible in some area from reverse side).

Antique Japanese set of 13 lotus leaves and blossoms. Carved of wood and lacquered gold. Made for a Buddhist temple altar, they symbolize the stages of the path toward enlightenment. This set is especially lavish with giant sized lotus leaves and towering lotus blossoms. They fit into a bronze vase.

It was carved by a late 19th century or early 20th century artist Ryuzan (柳山). It depicts a smiling mother holding an umbrella and carrying a child on her back. It is 7 1/2" high and 2 3/4" wide (from the bottom) and 2 3/8" thick (from the bottom). It is in great condition.

A peaceful cluster of homes blanketed in snow by Shirakura Niho enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kamo Sekkei (Kamo in Snow). This is likely an image from very close to the artists heart, he lived west of the Kamo River in Kyoto, and one can imagine this being one of the bridges spanning that river he has seen out on a winter day. Ink,Gofun & Light color on Silk bordered in light colored cloth...

Boro futonji with many mending patches and sashiko whose ground cloth is hand-spun cotton with stripes. It is dyed with vegetable indigo and the red color looks benibana (saffloer dye). Mending is very nicely done with sashiko. The second half of the 19th to early 20th century. W:94cm, L:172cm

19th century Japanese ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) in a form of a natural fruit pit skillfully carved with 2 scenes of scholars engaged in discussions, all among swirling clouds. Excellent carving in deep relief with precise undercutting and complete piercing of the body of the pit. Very nice mellow brown patina, in excellent condition. Height 1/2 inches.

Quite elegant Taisho Period wagumi Japanese style bamboo flower basket featuring bamboo inserts, susudake bamboo, and a rattan weave on the handle. Excellent condition. 16" tall by 12" wide. Ask for shipping quote.

An antique pair of Japanese Fusuma doors made of Hinoki (Cypress) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. Natural Urushi lacquer frame and hand painted design of Bamboo trees on one side and Pine trees with Bamboo on the opposite side. Bamboo symbolized tenacity and perseverance while the Pine tree represented a long life making these doors auspicious and full of good luck.

This is a samurai's hanten ( jacket ) and maetate ( apron ) which are worn in case of fire. It is made of handwoven asa ( hemp ) cloth. In good condition except for some tiny moth holes in the back. Edo period ( 18th or the former half of the 19th century ). 118.5cm x 79cm

Beautiful Japanese large bronze trumpet shaped vase with long neck decorated with highly raised dragon and phoenix in swirling clouds, the round body of the vase is decorated with raised scenes of birds in branches, Meiji Period (1868-1912), signed on bottom: Yoshida. Size: 24" high

Antique Japanese scroll with silk embroidery. Scroll shows a mystic and tranquil view of Mount Fuji floating among the clouds. Three separate scenes are painted in a vertical flow, with the very peak of Mount Fuji at the top, and a flowing river at the foreground. Signature of Kano Tsunenobu (1638-1713). This large antique Japanese would have been used in rural villages by the peasants who would go into the fields and hills to collect various herbs. Hand woven from grape vine bark, the basket has rope handle which also goes through loops at the bottom of the basket to provide added support for the weight.

Really rare ethnographic item in unusually good condition. the basket alone measures roughly 18 inches x 12 inches x 3+ inches...

19th century Japanese kozuka (sword knife) handle depicting Ebisu - one the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, that of fishing - happily hanging out in a humble boat by reeds in a stream. Wonderful crisp work - see his happy smiling face, texture of his hat and finely done reed leaves, in excellent condition. Signed SHOGETSUSAI HARUYUKI on the back - the artist is a listed 19th century Japanese metalsmith...
