A large sized Imari porcelain tripod censer decorated with motifs of peonies, wonderfully drawn karashishi or Chinese style lions, dragons,and phoenixes. Antique Japanese scroll painting of a tiger crouching on a rocky outcropping. The tiger, who represents the wind and the West looks up into the sky at the gathering storm clouds. Large paws grip the rocks and the tip of it's tail peeks out from under the mossy overhanging. Painted in sumi-e ink on silk. Signed by the artist. With kiri wood tomobako.

It was carved by a late Meiji period (1868~1911) artist Tozan (東山). It depicts a smiling wood cutter taking a break and tying his straw sandal lace. A sparrow is resting on his straw hat. It is 6 1/5" high, 3 7/16" wide (from the bottom) and 3" thick (from the bottom). Aside from two hair line cracks; one on his back head and one on the bottom, it is in great condition.

19th century Japanese tsuishu (cinnabar lacquer) netsuke, the front with a scene of a scholar reading a book by a low table under a pine tree with a view of a distant mountain. The back is carved with a scholar walking in a garden among trees and flowers. Both scenes have finely carved various brocade patterned backgrounds. Two parts fit snugly by joining and twisting them, metal fitting inside the front part with tied himotoshi cord. Superb crisp carving, in excellent condition...

Shofu Katei was born in 1870 in Seto, Japan. He later moved to Kyoto where has was adopted into the prestigious Shofu family kiln to create Japanese ceramics. In 1908, he set up the Shofu Ceramics Company, Ltd. and was awarded a Green Ribbon in 1915.

Japanese antique okimono carved of boxwood in the form of a lovely lady standing with an octopus. A whimsical scene with the lady holding the "nose" of the octopus who in return is sneaking his tentacle up her kimono. Wonderful attention to detail can be seen in the weaving of the basket behind the two figures as well as in the suction cups of the tentacles and the fashionable Edo Period knot in the woman's long hair.
