This is a humorous Japanese sake cup. The drinker would find that he has drunk from the face of Okame while others would see the other side of the cup with oni's (ogre) face and would have a laugh. A nice pair of authentic antiques, Imperial Nippon Japanese porcelain vases, which were made between 1891 and 1921. They are entirely hand-painted and highlighted in gold, depicting a continuous scenic landscape with two birds. The top of the vases is adorned with a raised jewel pattern.

The vases are marked underneath with "Imperial Nippon, Hand Painted." Please note that the picture of the two vases showing them slightly crooked is an error caused by the camera lenses...

Antique Chinese large porcelain vase. Decorated all over with a basket texture and a pair of dragons with a flaming pearl and cloud-like mist. The body of the vase is glazed a celadon green while the dragons remain a very pale bluish white. The dragons represent the endless cycle of transformation and the flaming wish-granting pearl is one of the Eight Treasures and represents pure intention.

A powder flask of a natural painted turtle and fitted boxwood nozzle and stopper cover. The skeletal shell of the turtle is smooth with a warm tone patina. The flask is attached by a silk chord to a piece of circular boxwood toggle that could be slipped into the belt. Mounted on a custom iron stand.

Japanese noh theater mask of a woman, carved with pierced eyes, mouth, and nostrils for the wearer, as well as two pierced holes at the temples to be secured against one's head. Lacquered in flesh tone, black hair and blackened teeth and eyes, red lips, and black lacquer interior. With kiri (paulownia) tomobako, inscribed with the name "Zouonna".

A very large pair of hardwood transom / temple architectural elements, elaborately carved with charming motifs of squirrels eating from grape vines. The carvings are deeply recessed with raised outside edges of a scrolling form. Realistic grape vines and leaves continue along the underside of each transom. Very heavy. Old Japanese Biidoro (vidro, Portuguese) kanzashi made out of glass. Glass making was introduced to the Japanese by the Portuguese in the16th century and there has been glass manufacturers in Japan ever since that date. It was particularly popular in Japan during the 19th century. The style of this kanzashi is called tama (ball) kanzashi. The ball is 3/4" (in diameter) natural coral. Japanese 17th/18th century scroll painting of a buddhist priest, outlined in a very rare style of incredibly tiny calligraphy mantra. The mantra repeats "Amida Butsu Nam Mo". The meditating priest holds a strand of mala beads and a willow branch and is seated upon a green lotus throne on clouds. The figure is most likely "Dengyo Daishi", the monk who brought Buddhism into Japan.

Japanese large Imari Porcelain Punch Bowl, 4 1/2" high, 12" diameter-top, early 1920, with typical Imari colors of red, green and orange overglaze enamel on top of the underglaze blue, and highlighted in gold. Very delightful Japanese garden scene just outside the door or window in divided cartouches. There are some scratch marks on the bottom inside the bowl, no cracks, no restoration, no damage.

Japanese Blue and White Transfer ware Porcelain Square cut corner deep Platter, 12" square, 1 1/2" high, pine tree, mountain and river design in the center, and two different shade of transfer blue design of trees, foliage and butterflies on the wide border. One shallow flake chip 3/4" wide underneath the rim and some old frits on the corner of the dish, and scratches in the glaze on top of the dish.

This is a representation of Shotoku taishi (574 A.D.-622 A.D.), the young princely protector of Buddhism in Japan. At the age of twenty, he reorganized Japan by promoting Chinese Confucian and Buddhist principles. His well known "Constitution with 17 Articles" was the first written law of Japan.
