An antique Japanese Cha Tansu made of Momiji (Maple) and Katsura woods. 4 sliding doors along the top hid a storage area where tea service acessories were kept. 2 sliding etched glass doors covered a display area where Japanese seasonal and holiday objects were showcased while the etching hid a small drawer and a storage space that the previous owner wanted to have left hidden. 2 more sliding doors, a hinged door and 2 side by side drawers round out this tansu...

Japanese Kiri wood square shape Hibachi with Copper lining, 9 1/2" high, 12" square, with inserted oval shape wood handles on two(2) sides, some separation in wood joint.

Tall dark bronze vase decorated with a bas-relief depicting irises (hanashobu) ; the rim with an openwork border with maji-motive.

Bottom marks : Kakuha-Sei, the mark of Sano Takachika, Kakuha Kanzaemon IX (角羽勘左衛門 - active early Meiji period). In 1869 he started a bronze-ware business in Yokohama.

Japanese Imari Porcelain Octagonal/Hexagonal shape Dish, early part of 1900's, 1 3/8" high, 6 1/8" x 5 1/4" wide, overglaze and gilt highlight design of a Swan with red crown flying over the Japanese Bamboo fenced flower garden in the center. Invisible restoration on one(1) small chip 1/4" area, and very shallow stained old chip 1/2" long on the top rim.

A very interesting chawan (tea bowl) dating from the Korean Joseon period (Richo in Japanese; 1392-1897). This particular piece appears to date from the 16th/ 17th century and comes with a very old box which appears to have been furnished sometime in Edo. The light creamy crackled glaze is smooth in the hand and fine hairline fractures radiate along the sides of the bowl contrasting nicely with the gold repairs...

Antique Japanese fireman's coat, cotton indigo dyed with sashiko stitching and freehand paste resist decoration (tsutsugaki). Design of Immortal God Kinko Sennon riding a giant carp.

Antique Japanese kaidan (step tansu). Made in two stacking sections and consisting of 7 steps with storage on one side. The top section has two drawers, a small compartment with a drop-in door on the very top and a compartment opened by sliding panels with vertical slats. The lower section has two drawers and a large compartment opened by sliding panels also with vertical slats. Made of sugi (cryptomeria) wood with reddish lacquer finish on the front. The steps have a natural finish...

Half cylinder shaped (Hanzutsu) tea bowl made of light, coarse unrefined Mino clay, with very little and small ishihaze (exploding stones).

The mouth has been trimmed in a fashion frequently seen in black oribe but rarely in yellow seto bowls. The expertly thrown body is covered with the typical ash glaze inside and outside which has turned into yellow, due to a slight iron oxide content in the clay; the thick and glossy glaze (guinomi-de) has a beautiful, fine crazing...

Japanese Keyaki wood with beautiful bold grain two(2) section Tansu with movable Brass Turtle and Eagle decoration on Black Iron Round Back Plate with Brass rim, heavy weight, Meiji period, 1890-1900, 46" high, 48" wide, 17 1/2" deep with two(2) graduated long drawers in upper section above one(1) shorter drawer next to two(2) small secret drawers inside the heavy black iron mounted blind door on the bottom right side...

A fine rectangular vase or incense stick holder of slab construction with applied leonine taotie style handles to its narrow sides...

18th century Japanese sword iron tsuba with pierced design of “hundred monkeys”, all in different attitudes. Excellent early piece with numerous perforations requiring enormous amount of work, precise detailing, gilded eyes of the creatures, wear and patina consistent with age. Height 2.74 inches, width 2.7 inches.

Exterior is covered in black lacquer with silver rims encircling both the bottom and lid. The interior of the lid is decorated in very finely-painted gold and silver lacquer with a scene of fish swimming among seaweed. A small rectangular red lacquer signature in seal form is seen on the left margin of the painting. The base of the box is also signed by the artist in gold lacquer. Japanese antique fukusa, a gift cover embroidered with "The Old Couple of Takasago" on wool (rasha, felt like), padded and lined with orange crepe silk, Meiji period (1868-1912).

The story of the old couple, Jo and Uba, came from the Noh play, Takasago, which was written during the Muromachi period (1336-1573) by Zeami. Jo and Uba were spirits who resided in an old pine tree which was two trees that grew together over the years...

Large Ko Imari Shochikubai Roundels Dish c.1730 No 2 An unusual dish decorated with a principal motif of three wreaths, wahana, each representing one of the three elements of the Shochikubai, further intersected and linked by a central ring all painted in underglaze blue with some gilt outlining. A type of design that is more frequently found used in the context of Lacquer and textiles...

This is a nice 5.75" x 1.75" foliate bowl, blue underglaze, with painted bamboo decoration and a fine brown line around the upper rim.

Condition: Fine except for a number of tiny chips in the brown rim paint. There are no major chips, hairlines or repairs.

A Japanese Imari dish decorated with various celebratory motifs within an octagonal border. The back with a ‘running fuku’ mark. 19th century.
