The elephant is made of hard enameled porcelain, the artist modeled it with care, it is very likely that it was created using several molds. It carries on its back a vase which serves as a receptacle for incense. The statuette is hollow, vents to evacuate gases during cooking were discreetly made under the ears. This Japanese netsuke is a lovely example of deer antler carved into a duo of abalone shells, the smaller resting on the surface of the larger shell. The piece has a wonderful old patina and is very tactile to the touch. The himotoshi are large and deep and there appears to be a very worn signature to the underside. This netsuke is in good condition with no damage.
