Late Meiji period (1890s to 1912) Japanese wooden kushi (hair comb) with lacquer decoration of cranes in flight on the background of pine branches. Beautifully made out of dense wood allowing for fine teeth, excellent lacquer work, wonderful piece in Japanese taste, some losses as can be seen on photos. Length 4.06 inches.

Unusual late Meiji period (1890s -1912) wooden sashi netsuke in a form of a pillar, its top carved as a face of the Zen Patriarch Daruma wearing monk’s cape. Wonderful face with severe expression, carved out of chosen matsu (Korean pine wood) in ittobori (one cut) style characteristic of Hida school of netsuke carvers, eyes are inlaid with metal. Himotoshi (cord opening) goes through the bottom to the back of the netsuke. Beautiful patina, very pleasant to hold. Height 4.2 inches.

DESCRIPTION: A large and handsome Sumida Gawa vase with ribbed body, high relief figures and pinched neck. A thick, traditional flambe' glaze in dark brown and blue covers the mouth and neck, and flows down the shoulders. Fine attention to detail has been paid to the handmade figures of a boy and girl standing on ledges against the ribbed body. Inoue (Ryosai) maker's mark in pear-shaped appliqué on the back. Early 20th C. (pre WWII) and in perfect condition; no chips or repairs...

Finely detailed bronze tea house koro or incense burner. Very unusual daruma window in relief. Taisho Period c. 1920. Roof is superb. Condition excellent. 5" tall by 4 1/2 " wide. Ask for shipping quote.

Japanese late 19th or early 20th Century porcelain vase. Made by artist SUWA SOZAN. Stamp of artist on bottom of vase. Comes with TOMOBAKO, original artist's box. The side of the vase has small raised rectangular areas which have design of fish, snail, chrysanthemums, peaches, shellfish, butterfly, phoenix and Japanese shishi lion. The vase is 10" tall and 9 1/2" in diameter.

A Japanese tobacco pouch, ojime and pipe case (kiseruzutsu) - a leather pouch with an impressed name/hallmark of a famous sake on the inside of the flap with a gilt bronze clasp of a Chinese man and go (Japanese chess, originally Chinese) table. The ojime is a Bizen type pottery bead modeled as a two headed karako (Chinese boy), lucky god Ebisu or Daikoku. The kiseruzutsu (pipe case) has a hand chiseled textured design on the exterior of an unknown material...

This early 20th century carved coral netsuke of an Oni (devil) mask is 1 ½” long, 1” wide and ½” thick. It depicts a very nicely carved and impressive Daikijin. One horn has been repaired. Aside from that, it is in great condition.

Daikoku is one of the 7 Gods of Good Fortune - that of abundance and of rice - and the rats are associated with him - where there is a lot of rice, there are rats. Very nicely carved, great smiling face, black ink highlights, beautifully depicted textile patterns, pleasant patina...

A small Satsuma cup and saucer, probably Taisho period, c 1920. Well composed and painted decoration of a flower shrub in colours and gilt, on a finely crackle-glazed ground in pearly off-white. Painted seal mark to cup and saucer. Diameter of saucer "4¼/ 11,5 cm, height of cup "2/ 5 cm. Note: there are two more saucers of the same kind available. Condition: fine, except for some stains on the saucer as seen in photos.

Antique Japanese ceramic bizen ware sculpture of Ebisu and Daikoku, two of the most popular of the Lucky Gods. Diakoku, who is usually pictured standing on top of bales of rice, instead stands on top of a large ball.
