This Japanese netsuke is a lovely example of deer antler carved into a duo of abalone shells, the smaller resting on the surface of the larger shell. The piece has a wonderful old patina and is very tactile to the touch. The himotoshi are large and deep and there appears to be a very worn signature to the underside. This small, double-doored black lacquered shrine contains a carved and gilded sandalwood image of a Bodhisattva sitting on a lotus throne. The gilding is original and is worn from age and use. A six panel screen with mineral colors, and gold leaf clouds meandering though out scenes depicting a view from the Tale of Genji. The chapter that would be closely associated to the screen is Chapter 19, Usugumo, translated as Wisp of Clouds. The scene is showing Prince Genji wearing a white informal court robe, lined with red and is selecting robes for the visit of Lady Akashi.
