An ancient Egyptian Scarab, c. 1450 BC, from the famous Mitry collection (see our Homepage). It is a beautiful piece of blue steatite, 3/8” long (10 mm), an easy-to-carve stone that hardens when heated. Yogi (futon in the shape of kimono) made of hand-spun cotton with tsutsugaki wave pattern and a family crest, which is vegetable indigo dye. Yogi is seen more in colder districts as shoulders are wrapped for keeping warmth. Generally, in good condition but has some stains and spots near the hem, and also some mending patches. Blue silk chair cover, embroidered with a Phoenix, a Buddhist Lion, a cloud and a lemon in gold thread. Chinese work from the Qing period 19th century or before. Many disjointed gold threads but complete. A strip at the top cut should be missing 2 centimeters. 51x166cm

Exquisite Pre-Columbian stirrup vessel depicting Two Jaguars, an adult and cub, 500 BC–500 AD, 8" H x 10.5 ; Vicus, Peru. This piece appears in "Pre-Columbian Art" by Alan Lapiner, in color on page 186. Its broad grin is reminiscent of the characters in Maurice Sendak's book "Where the Wild Things Are." It has been reassembled from approximately 5 pieces, with the cracks filled in.

A very interesting and completely intact ceramic figure of a honed God seated on his throne, holding two cobra snakes, Hinduism in Java, c. 10th.-12th. cent. AD.

Size: 14 cm. tall and 10 cm. wide.

Condition: Extremely fine for any medieval terracottta - intact!

Provenance: Old Swedish Collection, formerly in the Ban Bang Yoga Carta collection - an Indonesian professors collection, bought in the 1960s-1970s.

Highly interesting and rare early Javanese ceramic sculpture of the infant Buddha, Majapahit Empire, c. 11th.-12th. cent. AD.

The buddha is depicted as very fat child and seated and holding something in his right hand.

Size: A very substantial figure, 21 cm. tall, 19 cm. wide and c. 15-16 cm. deep. Weights is c. 2,2 kilograms...

Dragons charge the sides of this large water urn covered in crackled pale glaze emblazoned with a panel which specifies: Water for the 11 Faced Kannon (Quanyin). Inside is lined with iron glaze. Outside key frets surround the rim leading to a nearly flat shoulder upon which blossom five petaled plum flowers. Below this the dragons vie in the tempest, with the base drawing precipitously covered in Shipppo designs (7 treasures). It is 38 cm (15 inches) tall, 34 cm (13-1/2 inches) diameter...

Attractive Greek Campanian red-figure squat lekythos with palmette. Late 4th century BC.

Height 10,8cm, ø corpus 5,1cm.

Condition: The jug intact, with minor ancient chip to the rim and encrustations. The decorations are finely preserved on this vessel. Small pinhole drilled in antiquity in the base rim.

Boro futonji with many mending patches and sashiko whose ground cloth is hand-spun cotton with stripes. It is dyed with vegetable indigo and the red color looks benibana (saffloer dye). Mending is very nicely done with sashiko. The second half of the 19th to early 20th century. W:94cm, L:172cm

Girl's kimono made of hand-spun cotton with flower motif which is Yuzen-zome (hand-painting). The ground cloth is benibana (safflower) dye. Benibana was grown in Yamagata prefecture in Edo period, and it was very precious. It was traded to Kyoto and dyed there for kosode kimono or others for women of a family of high-ranking samurai or merchants. Benibana dye has faded in upper back, but generally in good condition. Startled to enlightenment, this is a large Edo period figure of a Rakan (Sanskrit: Arhat), a Buddhist saint kozutsucarved in the Yosegi-zaiku method of joined blocks of wood. Originally covered in polychrome colors, much has grayed and flaked away with time, a fitting aspect of the image. He has glass eyes which seem to burn violently with realization. The image is 43 x 36 x 51 cm (17 x 14 x 20 inches) and is in solid condition. The head is removable, slotted into the body at the collar...

Cast bronze "soliflore"vase.The neck is engraved in the archaic Chinese style of stylized cicadas and Greeks, it ends by flaring and closing to create a bulb in the shape of a head of garlic, hence the English term "Garlic" to name this style, the body is modeled in a slice of melon.Small vase, simple but very elegant.. Chinese work early Qing Dynasty.The beautiful old patina of this bronze confirms it as being centuries old.18th century or earlier. H:17cm.

Keman in cut bronze gilded with mercury. Decorated with flowers and Karyobinga (winged musical deities). Keman are hung in Japanese temples and replace bouquets of flowers. Usually Kemans are only decorated with flowers. The one presented here is exceptional with its 4 karyobinga cast in relief and riveted on the copper plate cut with flowers. Very beautiful carving, thick gilding...

A stunning terracotta figure of Horse and Rider, Parthian Empire, 1st-3rd. cent. AD.

The tall bearded figure emerging from the body of the horse, wearing folded cap, the horse with applied disc eyes, traces of decoration. Their bodies is blending into a single, triangular form, with the head and upper body of the man directly behind the horse’s head. Finely detailed features of a mature Parthian horseman, probably nobility.
