Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Horse (AD 618 - 906)

This pottery horse was made during the early part of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It stands upright with its head turned very slightly to its left. It is made from a buff-coloured pottery and is particularly "heavily-potted". Looking inside the body shows it was made in a two-piece mould. It has been "cold painted" in a base coat of a creamy-white pigment with details picked out in red and black pigments...

This is a beautiful example of an old Kyoto Yuzen dyeing. In this kimono, you can see the white lines around the designs, the very characteristic of Yuzen dye. This is where the rice paste is used to resist the dye and is later washed off. The dye on the silk bleeds. By outlining or covering the design area with the paste, the dye artists can work with the design more freely in detail than in the older pre-Yuzen method, which simply uses dip dying and/or embroidery...

An antique Japanese bamboo basket made for Ikebana flower arranging. Depicts an archaic Chinese bronze vessel with flared open mouth design with side handles. The weave of the body suggests the pattern that would have imbued if this were a bronze form. Base is a six pointed foot with maker's sign that reads Sarihen.

An antique Japanese bamboo Ikebana basket in a bowl shape with a gnarled Wisteria handle. Clad in thick diagonal 1 3/4" slats with 2 supporting 1/2 bamboo stalk atop the basket measuring each 5" in length. Split bamboo rope foot. Wisteria handle features 4 appendages which harkens to a stylized dragon. Natural soot patina acquired over years of loving use and display.
