Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Horse (AD 618 - 906)

This pottery horse was made during the early part of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It stands upright with its head turned very slightly to its left. It is made from a buff-coloured pottery and is particularly "heavily-potted". Looking inside the body shows it was made in a two-piece mould. It has been "cold painted" in a base coat of a creamy-white pigment with details picked out in red and black pigments...

A very rare Qingbai melon shaped water dropper from the Hutian kilns. Date: Song Dynasty (960-1279) Height: ca. 4,5 cm Condition:a large (5 mm) chip under the spout.

Museum piece with extraordinary history. This altar table was one of 4 pieces we acquired at auction from the private residence of the 14th and final Daimyo (Lord)of the Tokushima Han (clan) Hachisuka Mochiaki of Awa Province on Shikoku Island in central Japan in the Edo Period. He lived 1846-1918...

A good quality deep bowl on a relatively high foot-ring decorated in a full Imari pallette, sans aubergine enamels, and decorated with a curiously constructed set of three reserves in underglaze blue with a central stylised Chrysanthemum (or possibly a Lotus, or fusion of the two) with assymetric stylised vine like scrolls surrounding a light iron red wash with gilt karakusa vine ground...

19th century Japanese scroll in ink and colors on silk painted by 6 different artists and depicting different hyotan (natural dried double gourds). Wonderful Zen subject, beautiful work, elegant composition, signed by each artist by the gourd that he painted. Paper mounts with some foxing on its lower part), spotted bamboo scroll ends, excellent painting for tea ceremony. Painting size 13 x 19.25 inches, scroll size 40 x 21 inches.

19th century netsuke carved in a shape of a bamboo section. Very simple elegant design in Japanese taste with clean lines, himotoshi is formed by central peg that has a hole in its back part through which a cord goes. Beautifully carved natural features of the plant, excellent patina. Signed RYUSHO on the back - the artist is listed on p. 901 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Height 1 13/16 inches.

Japanese Imari Porcelain Double Gourd shape Vase, Ca. Meiji period, 1868-1912, 12" high, 1 3/8" diameter-top rim, 7" wide-widest section, 4" diameter-bottom rim, flying Phoenix bird and dragon inside four(4) separate round circles, and Mon design inside the top round circles, all decorate with typical overglaze red and underglaze blue, highlight in gold. Top rim has rough area with old tiny frit.

AN ARITA BLUE & WHITE MOKKO DISH, 2ND HALF OF THE 18TH CENTURY.

An attractive mokko (lobed) and moulded dish decorated with a figure seated beneath mist enshrouded trees. The cavetto is moulded with swirls and flowers, the rim with a dark iron rich kuchibeni dressing.

Approximately 22.5 cm wide. Fine original undamaged condition...

This is a beautiful example of an old Kyoto Yuzen dyeing. In this kimono, you can see the white lines around the designs, the very characteristic of Yuzen dye. This is where the rice paste is used to resist the dye and is later washed off. The dye on the silk bleeds. By outlining or covering the design area with the paste, the dye artists can work with the design more freely in detail than in the older pre-Yuzen method, which simply uses dip dying and/or embroidery...

An antique Japanese bamboo basket made for Ikebana flower arranging. Depicts an archaic Chinese bronze vessel with flared open mouth design with side handles. The weave of the body suggests the pattern that would have imbued if this were a bronze form. Base is a six pointed foot with maker's sign that reads Sarihen.

Anatomical votive offering in form of an eye. Frontally molded and reworked with the modeling tool.
The Etruscans knew a great variety of votive terracottas, which they placed in their temples as thanksgiving offerings or wishes for healing.
Some of the votive eyes found appeared with eyelids and the periocular tissue, while others just showed the eyeball...

An antique Japanese bamboo Ikebana basket in a bowl shape with a gnarled Wisteria handle. Clad in thick diagonal 1 3/4" slats with 2 supporting 1/2 bamboo stalk atop the basket measuring each 5" in length. Split bamboo rope foot. Wisteria handle features 4 appendages which harkens to a stylized dragon. Natural soot patina acquired over years of loving use and display.

Age: Meiji Era (1868-1912)

An intact incense burner with a lovely chestnut brown patina, China, Ming Dynasty, later 16th.- early 17th. century AD.

Standing on 4 legs, finely decorated with archaic motifs and with a Chilon / Lion on the top of the square lid.

Height: 22 cm. Weight: 965 grams.

Condition: Good Very fine and intact.

Shou Lao is the Chinese deity of longevity and is also called Shou Xing, Shou Hsing, and Nan Ji Xian Weng. Legend holds that Shou Lao began as a star in the southern constellation Argo, and he is sometime referred to as the Old Man of the South Pole. He is easily recognizable by his over sized forehead, representing wisdom, and his extra long beard, which is meant to literally demonstrate a long life...

Naturalistic crayfish made of copper from the Meiji period, 1868 -1912. The piece is unusual in that the legs, antennae, and tail move in the same way that a real crayfish moves. It is signed Shinju on the base of the body. It measures 6" long.

DESCRIPTION: A large, non-damper opium pipe, consisting of a long bamboo tube terminating at one end with a bowl of brass and copper overlay acting as the saddle, socket and damper. A tapering brass tip finishes the other end. Around the bowl is a double flower design in copper and brass, and on each side is a decorative brass fish with scales. Attached along the bamboo stem are lengths of braded yarn, one of which terminates in a brass ring for hanging...
