A vintage mid century oil on board or oil on canvasboard painting of a dirt track in the Arizona desert, the landscape filled with the classic saguaro cacti, and at right a yellow flowering tree, causing the painting to be titled "Lluvia de Oro Tree" ("Shower of Gold") on the backing paper, where the artist, LOUIS ELMORE SMITH, also dated it April 1961. He signed it on the lower right corner. Painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition...
Very old small pencil drawing of a town scene, 3 1/2" by 3 5/8" (11 1/2" by 10" framed), unsigned, and the artist and origin unknown. It is simply an antique drawing. Someone thought enough of it to have a hand-drawn ornate mat on gray-blue paper. A church tower appears at center and a tree at left, and two tiny figures at lower right. There is a mysterious red circle stamped on the reverse; difficult to say if it may be a collector's stamp.
A drawing, pencil with touches of yellow, lilac and even possibly blue, signed at lower right by one of Hungary's most important artists of the twentieth century, CZOBEL BELA (1883-1976). The subject, judging from other drawings by the artist, could well be a garden, perhaps his garden in Szentendre. The sheet measures 12" by 11 1/2" inside the mat and the entire sheet is 13 1/2" by 12". The artist, of Hungarian-Jewish heritage, was a student of Bela Ivanyi Grunwald...
A large (32" by 44" as framed) acrylic on heavy canvas, the subject a Victorian gingerbread-style Key West house with luxuriant tropical foliage in the foreground, signed at lower right and dated 1999 at lower right, by noted American contemporary artist JEANETTE CHUPACK. The work is titled on reverse affixed tag "Key West Porch Garden", and the original $4,300 price is written nearby...
Original drawing in ink and gold paint on white paper, 6 1/2" by 6" (18 1/2" by 16" in tasteful silver leaf framing, with Plexiglas), signed at lower right and dated at lower left 10 V 93 by the noted American graphic artist and painter JAYME ODGERS (1939-). The image appears to be of an abstracted face. Odgers was instrumental in the late 1970's revamping of California design. He was involved in creating poster images for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games...
Etching on very thin paper, "Charles Baudelaire, de Face", 1865, later, likely posthumous impression, by the famous French artist EDOUARD MANET (1832-1883). The work measures 3 3/4" by 3 1/4" inside the plate mark, and the sheet measures 8 1/4" by 6 1/4". This is Guerin #38 in the catalogue raisonne, and probably the 4th (final) state. The paper being very thin and flimsy, would lead me to believe this would NOT be a twentieth century restrike. There is a simple modern frame...
**PAINTING HAS ACQUIRED DAMAGE SINCE PHOTOS WERE TAKEN** Contact me first. An historically interesting and significant oil painting of an early street scene in Los Angeles' small, historical Chinatown, circa 1930's, 30" by 38", unframed, signed at lower left by listed Southern California artist BERTHA TOWNSEND COLER (1865-1948). Coler was born in Ohio and studied with Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase in New York City...
A PAIR of ink on paper drawings, one of a young woman reclining, (7 1/2" by 10") the other a young boy seated cross-legged (8 1/2" by 6 1/2"), both signed by the noted American actor, accomplished artist and writer/novelist, PETER MARK RICHMAN (1927-). One is dated 1966, the other inscribed "For Al". Richman, now 90 years old, has an extensive biography, all visible online...
A really nicely painted oil on canvas landscape of a whitewashed, red-roofed farmhouse, a lane leading up to it, a dog, several tiny figures and a large feathery tree completing the scene, 13" by 16 3/4" (18 1/2" by 22 1/4" as framed), signed at lower right "G Zannoni" and dated below that with what appears as an 1860's date (partly under the frame, hard to see). The work may look slightly primitive close up but when viewed from normal viewing distance it all comes together as intended...
A twentieth century pastel on paper drawing of white and yellow flowers in a white vase, signed at lower right with what appears as "Raymond" or similar. The work measures 10 1/2" by 8 1/2" inside the present brown mat (16 1/2" by 12 1/2" framed). Found in Los Angeles, the work is on English paper---I suppose it could be English. The hand that created this was talented and it is a lovely little still life.
A PAIR of oil on canvas paintings of a younger man, each 33" by 24 3/4", unsigned, circa late 20th century. The pair is striking in that one is painted in monochromatic style, the other in natural color. Placed together, they make for a most interesting set. Condition is generally good with a few minor flaws they have acquired, including light abrasions, light soiling in places, a tiny tiny puncture, etc. Speckles in hair on colored painting are just a light effect...
A most interesting Mid-Century multiple: a "cast stencil", three dimensional print featuring a grid pattern of roughly rectangular shapes, signed at lower right in pencil and numbered 10/75 in pencil at lower left by noted Arkansas-associated artist PAUL MAXWELL (1925-2015). This is a typical image by the artist and sculptor...
A circa 1910 small oil on canvas landscape of a forest pond, signed at lower right "O. Sch". This 3 1/2" by 5 1/2" work (9 1/2" by 11 1/2" framed) came from a local family of German heritage. Their art, some of which I acquired, came with the family from the old country. This work has some condition issues, as the canvas over the decades has buckled, with sharp horizontal roughly parallel "ridges" now apparent, as well as craquelure...
Oil on canvas painting of a white bench in a park or garden, the sun dappled vegetation depicted in colorful palette of purple, yellow, and green, signed at lower right by Southern California contemporary artist PATRICIA SHILLING-STEWART. The work measures 16" by 20" (20" by 23 1/2" in shiny white laminate frame). There is some information on the artist online; she is based in Los Alamitos near Long Beach, and paints flowers, aquariums and other colorful subject matter, many of the original wo...
For the collector of classic California Plein Air art, an oil on canvas work, "Laguna Waves", 20" by 24" (27 1/2" by 31 1/2" in quality reproduction gold frame), signed at lower right by well listed and often-auctioned CHRISTIAN VON SCHNEIDAU (1893-1976). The painting features true impressionist brush strokes and colors, enhanced by a recent professional cleaning which really revealed those beautiful strokes and colors. Von Schneidau was born in Sweden of noble birth. He attended the Stockhol...
A view of the "Kolk" in Rotterdam, Holland, titled "Rotterdam Kolk" at lower left, plate signed with conjoined initials (tiny) and pencil signed "Marius Janssen" at lower right margin, 12 1/4" by 18 1/2" as framed. The Kolk is a familiar part of the center of this historic city, which suffered severe damage in World War II. The paper has darkened with age, the margins are very tight, maybe trimmed a bit to fit the frame, and there is a small edge tear at upper right, not really visible at all ...

An historically interesting and significant oil painting of an intimate scene in Los Angeles' small, historical Chinatown, circa 1930's, 30" by 24", the frame 37" by 31", signed at lower left by listed Southern California artist BERTHA TOWNSEND COLER (1865-1948) and titled on stretcher "Home sweet home in old Chinatown". A label on the frame shows the original $150 price and the artist's 2021 Holly Drive, Los Angeles, address at the time. Coler was born in Ohio and studied with Robert Henri an...
An unframed miniature painting featuring amazingly detailed ink and watercolor scenes of 17th or 18th Venice, the sheet 10" by 8", signed at bottom margin by listed French illustrator artist JEAN GRADASSI (1907-1989). Condition is excellent. Many hours of work went into creating this work, which approaches medieval manuscripts and book of hours paintings in its detail. "Jean Gradassi" is written on the reverse; without that aid I might not have been able to identify the artist from the signatu...
Something of a mystery piece, this unsigned mixed media drawing in gouache, watercolor, pencil and ink rather resembles the stage design work of the noted artist Eugene Berman (1899-1972). Measuring 14" by 19 1/2", unframed, the drawing is on paper laid down on another sheet of paper. It has traveled without framing so has become dog eared and acquired a number of other flaws including a heavy crease at upper left and other issues within the imagery. The drawing of the figures at center parti...
Oil on canvas landscape, unframed, 14 1/2" by 21", signed at lower right, titled "Sheep Herds" or similar on reverse, the subject a forest with a vaguely defined figure at right, and equally vaguely defined sheep at center left. The landscape composition is almost semi abstract, reminiscent of Albert Pinkham Ryder. The artist, GEORGE THOMPSON PRITCHARD (1878-1962), was a widely traveled man whose reputation is likely muddied by those wide travels, which led to his tackling a wide range of subj...
A lithograph of the year 1953, pencil signed at lower right margin, by the noted 20th century American artist WILLIAM GROPPER (1897-1977). The work is presently unframed, housed inside a mat that lifts up (taped at top corners). Gropper, as the accompanying original Associated American Artists label describes, was born in New York and remained there. He studied under Robert Henri, George Bellows, and Giles. Paintings by the artist are included in American and international collections, with ...
One of a number of fine Bermuda watercolors in my shop, this is a work featuring white-roofed houses on the water, several small boats visible at left, and yucca at right. The work measures 6 1/4" by 13 3/4" and 16" by 23 1/2" including old gilded oak frame and gold mat typical of the period. The artist signed at lower left "A. T. Smith" and wrote "Bermuda '95" at lower right. I do not see information on an artist by this name. Nineteenth century Bermuda views are scarce and desirable. A ra...

A vintage woodcut print in black with touches of yellow and red in the windows of the picturesque seaside structures, unsigned, titled in the image "NOEL", white speckles (sprayed?) indicating snowflakes, 12 1/2" by 9 1/2" framed. The scene resembles Maine villages such as Port Clyde or Castine. Likely a work from that region, circa 1940's, possibly 1930's. I opened up the backing and found no further information.
Old (possibly 19th century, early 20th at latest) American watercolor painting of a small cove and beach, unsigned, 9" by 12 5/8" inside the present mat (13" by 16 3/4" in modern framing), with some experimental sketching by the artist on the reverse. On that side he/she wrote "Aug. 19 water deeper, especially in the curve". The drawing is by a talented hand which unfortunately did not sign it. Could be as early as 1880's, as late as about 1930 I would imagine. The handwriting is of the old ...

An extensive country landscape featuring rolling fields and meadows, the evidence of man including a dirt road, fence posts, and distant house, as chickens forage at center right. The oil on canvas, 22" by 25" work (27" by 30 1/2" framed) is signed at lower left by listed German artist OTTO MARX (1887-1962). There is not a lot of information on the artist but he did produce nicely painted impressionist works of the German countryside. Marx signed his name and dated the painting 1912. The colo...
Oil on canvasboard painting of flowers, vase and pot, 9 3/4" by 13 1/2" (14" by 18" framed), signed at lower right "L. E. Thackery". No listed artist comes up with a search for this name, but that does not diminish the quality of the work itself, which probably dates to about the 1940's. There are two missing small areas of paint at left, otherwise condition is excellent. The frame post-dates the art and is pleasant and complementary.
An original gouache (or casein, tempera, etc.) on paper of a Native American male warrior, signed at lower right by the noted artist WOODROW WILSON BIG BOW (1914-1988) and dated there '50. This is an earlier work by the artist, who was born in Carnegie, Oklahoma, the grandson of Chief Big Bow. The artist studied at the University of Oklahoma in 1939. In the course of a career in fine art, he was a set painter for western movies, and painted murals, which adorn the RCA Building in New York and...
Pencil signed by the artist at lower right and numbered 934/975 at lower left, is this contemporary offset color print, 8 3/4" by 10 1/2" inside the mat, 17" by 19" framed, the subject a formally dressed older couple with martini glasses sharing a quiet moment. BARBARA A. WOOD, the artist, is from Ohio but also has spent considerable time in California, and, I believe, Georgia. Her colorful, highly popular much reproduced work, whether in oil or a graphic work, often features studies of figures ...
Photograph titled in the negative at lower left "Douglas and Juneau Alaska view from Mt. Jumbo", signed again in the negative at bottom center by "E. Andrews photo". The photo measures 11 1/4" by 18 5/8" inside the mat and 19 1/2" by 26" framed. According to information taken from the internet, the photographer, ED ANDREWS, was born in Norway in 1872, arriving in Douglas, Alaska in 1897 as a young man during the Klondike gold rush years. He worked as a clerk in the Treadwell Store. After owni...
This work needs some TLC, due to a large rip, unstable and missing paint, and grime......a vintage late 19th century/early 20th century work on canvas, 18" by 30", unframed, apparently unsigned, the subject one of the volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest. The painting should be saved for posterity, but for that to happen, it will require relining, cleaning and inpainting by a professional restorer. If you are a restorer yourself, this would be an ideal acquisition.
