This is a very early watercolor, 9 1/2" by 5 3/4" framed, in the style of the early 19th century, titled at bottom "Double Rose", by an anonymous artist lost to time. His or her handiwork has survived likely 150 years or more but has lost a little color from fading, and the paper has browned. These are not faults---rather, they give the drawing age and character...

Oil on canvas, 12" by 15 3/4", unframed and unsigned, the subject a pensive figure, likely a male, seated on a breezy patio with French doors, curtains and a Paris-style small cafe table and chairs, a tea or coffee service on the table. The anonymous artist created a very appealing, contemporary little work, with impressive impressionist technique. The painting is in excellent condition with just a bit of stretcher bar show-through at top...

This is a very contemporary work, unframed, on a wood or masonite panel, 8 3/4" by 12", signed (incised) at lower right corner "EW" and dated there "01". The scene is a city street, depicted in rather bright color, in an impressionist technique; what is quite unusual here is the added medium used, the surface obviously having been worked with wax (I believe this might be called "encaustic" when used in a painting)...

One could call this work a homage to Jackson Pollock and Sam Francis: colorful drips in red, blue, yellow and gray, on an inky black background, 20 1/4" by 24 1/2" as simply framed in silvery metal behind Plexiglas. There is no signature. A fine choice if you are looking for original abstract art for your mid century or modern interior.

Oil or acrylic on canvas, unframed, 10" by 14", unsigned, the work painted in a harmonious and quite modern mix of varying shades of purples and greens, topped with white drips, the result a pleasing work that would look great in a contemporary or mid century setting. You would not necessarily have to frame this before hanging it on the wall. Condition is excellent.

This is an original drawing in charcoal and watercolor, by the well listed French artist LUCIEN PHILIPPE MORETTI (1922-2000), the subject a young boy, 25 1/2" by 19 1/2", unframed. It is signed by the artist at lower right, dated 54, and the place where it was drawn is also present (the "Place du Tertre", in the heart of Montmartre's artist district)...

Offered together as a pair, these are hand colored stipple engraving botanical prints, one titled "Neottia speciosa", the other "Paonia albiflora", by the highly important Belgian-born botanical artist of the late years of the 18th century and early years of the 19th, PIERRE-JOSEPH REDOUTE (1759-1840). The original drawings from which the images derive were created sometime around 1810...

PAIR of watercolors, the larger of raspberries on the vine, painted with amazing attention to detail and realism, measuring 10 3/4" by 8" inside the mat; the smaller painting of three bright red cherries and a leaf, measuring 6" by 9" inside the mat, BOTH SIGNED AT LOWER RIGHT with initials "M. C. R.". Since acquiring these works together at a shop in California's Gold Country a few years back, I have attempted to figure out who might have created them...

Oil on canvas contemporary landscape of a jagged high mountain peak, trees and a large boulder catching the atmospheric light in the foreground, unframed, 36" by 24", signed at lower right with a signature that resembles "Joseph Eugene" or "Joseph Evgeny". The artist has handled dawn or sunset light to great effect, as did many of the Hudson River artists. An alpenglow lights up the peak, and a sunbeam lights up the boulder...

Oil on canvasboard painting of red tulips in a bright yellow vase on a tabletop, two apricots or peaches at lower left, unsigned, in a gold frame in wall-ready condition. This is likely by the hand of a talented amateur painter, but it all "works", with bright attractive colors and a clean overall appearance. The entire work as framed measures 16 1/2" by 13 1/2". See a number of other floral works in my shop.

Oil on canvas extensive view of a town of red-roofed houses by the sea, a colorful garden and balustrade railing in the foreground, executed by an unknown artist, likely in the latter years of the 20th century. The artist painted a highly impressionistic work (27" by 31", 35 1/2" by 40" framed) in cheerful, light, sunny colors. The work is very decorative and is in perfect condition, so would be an item that you could hang on the wall immediately. Frame is in almost perfect condition as well...

This was once a beautiful late 1950's period example of Italian abstract art, executed by the listed artist, from Venice, Italy, GIOVANNI GIULIANI (1893-1965). Unfortunately due to careless storage by one or many owners (it was exposed to moisture), combined with the artist's choice of materials, it is now a restorer's special, worthy of conservation. I have received a quote of $400 to have it relined so that it can safely travel...

Oil on canvas extensive mountain and trees landscape laid on board, 8" by 10" (10 1/2" by 12 1/2" framed), unsigned, circa late 1920's to mid 1930's. I am certain that this is by a listed artist but sadly there's just no hint as to who created this. The scene could be western, or eastern; hard to tell. It was found in Southern California. I would lean towards it being a western scene...

Oil on canvas extensive landscape of trees, a body of water, hills and distant structures, 24" by 36" (31" by 43" in gold frame), signed at lower left "Emile Bovard". I suspect this to be a pen name for a talented artist as I see no listing for an Emile Bovard. The painting was likely executed in the 1970's or 1980's I would judge, from the materials and technique...

Watercolor on heavy paper landscape with house on a moor at sunset, a distant hill at left and blooming white wildflowers in the foreground, measuring 8 3/4" by 11 1/4" inside the mat, 17" by 20" in a simple old wood frame, and signed with initials that look to me like "R.E.M."---but this is just a guess. The piece likely was created in the last years of the nineteenth or early years of the 20th century. The shape of the house suggests to me an English rather than American origin. Condition i...

Coastal seascape painting on pebbly surface old gray art board, likely the California coast but possibly Maine, circa early twentieth century, unsigned, measuring 7" by 17" (14 1/2" by 25" in its interesting blackish with reddish design frame). The work and framing is very presentable as-is, with just very slight wear to the frame. At the left edge one can see where the portion hidden by framing is fresher in color; therefore we can state that a cleaning would remove the somewhat yellowed varn...

Watercolor with gouache highlights on paper painting 13 3/4" by 9 1/2" inside the mat, of a large and impressive castle on a hill, (possibly Windsor Castle near London), a pastoral landscape with figures in the foreground, signed in pencil at lower right "A WATT". There is a listing for an Arthur George Watt (1883-1935) but I doubt this be the same artist, as the techniques and style do not mesh and the dates are wrong; this drawing is earlier. Watercolor on paper painting of a classic stone castle with figures outside its portals, 14" by 10 1/2" (26 1/2" by 23" as framed), apparently unsigned. This is a circa 1850 work which has survived in presentable condition. There is foxing in the sky principally, as shown, but no large stains. To be sure, there were a lot of anonymous skilled watercolor artists in the British Isles in the 19th century, though this might well have been created by an artist that would be "listed" today.

Samuel Colman (1832-1920, sometimes misspelled as "Coleman") is today regarded as an important American artist of the nineteenth century, some of his works selling into the six figures at major auction. A traveler, he strayed far from his New England roots, taking in exotic locales in the Mediterranean, continental Europe, Mexico, and, notably, the American West. After training under Asher B. Durand and Carolus-Duran, he exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York as early as 1850,...

Old, vintage print, somewhat resembling a chromolithograph when viewed with a magnifier, 26" by 20 1/4" as framed, the subject lush red roses and fresh green leaves. I thought that this might have been an original work but determined that it is actually a print, though a very good one. It is a typical view of a prosperous new homestead in the nineteenth century.
