Dramatic linocut print, the sheet 26 1/4" by 17 7/8", unframed, numbered at lower left 3/6 and pencil signed at lower right and dated there 1971, the "HB" blind stamp adjacent, by the important and still highly underrated Swiss-California modernist HANS GUSTAV BURKHARDT (1904-1994). The subject is somewhat uncertain; perhaps a look at a catalogue raisonne of the artist's graphic works would provide the title. Burkhardt was born in Switzerland and arrived in America in 1924...

Decorative lithograph in colors, 13 1/4" by 19 3/4" (22" by 28" as framed), unsigned, with The Collector's Guild label affixed to the backing, 1973, (titled there as "Homecoming", but from what I can determine, "Monumental" is the title in common use). This is a decorative print in excellent condition, the paper white and fresh and colors unfaded...

This is a large lithograph, 32 1/2" by 22 3/4", unframed, the subject a reclining nude in a claustrophobic room hung with framed artworks, signed at lower right in pencil by the artist WILLIAM BRICE, and numbered at lower left 5/20 examples. The work was created in 1962 and bears the blindstamp of Tamarind, as well as another unidentified blind stamp on the front and an ink stamp of a gallery, or printer, on the reverse...

Drawing, I believe in charcoal, 12 3/4" by 18 1/2" inside the matting, framed, but no glass, signed at lower left "M. Moss" and dated "March '93", the subject a large wooden house on a lake surrounded by mountains, small boats tied up in front. I think this is American but I suppose it could also be English; I'm undecided..........though, the framing suggests would make me lean towards American, as the reverse was backed by the typically American wood slats with knotholes...

Pastel on paper drawing of late autumn trees in a wooded landscape around a pond or small lake, 21 1/4" by 26 1/4" (31" by 36 1/2" framed), signed at lower right in all capital letters "CLAUDE REME". I don't see a listing by this name so the work stands on its own decorative powers, which are significant. There is a lot of atmosphere in this quiet scene, and the piece is big enough to power a wall on its own. Condition is excellent...

In the style of Philippe Noyer, or possibly Charles Levier or Bernard Buffet, is this unsigned circa 1960's oil on canvas painting, 20" by 16" (28" by 24" framed), the subject a girl, lost in thought, seated on a chair in one of those intimate Parisian attic bedrooms with skylight, the walls covered with a decorative wallpaper, a vase, mirror, and toiletries on the dressing table completing the scene...

(**One of two works by the artist in my shop**). Unlike most commonly seen works by this artist, which are actually serigraph prints, this is an original oil on canvas painting, measuring 34" by 18" (unframed). The scene, which could be described as a floral fantasy, incorporating at least two human heads floating within the composition, is rather typical of the work of the artist, HERMANN DIETRICH (1916-2003). Dietrich's online profile has only in recent years become more developed...

Watercolor on paper painting of creamy roses, 17 3/4" by 14 1/2" as simply framed, signed at lower right "Vivian E. Tiedemann" and dated there 1907. This is a typical turn-of-the-century work by an amateur artist, though, a skilled amateur. Such watercolor paintings of roses were popular in the Victorian era and even into the early new century, artists continued to paint them in oil and watercolor. This example is in excellent condition...

A nineteenth century gentleman deep in thought, searching for the answer to an obviously vexing problem, is the subject of this etching, created in the late 1870's by artist Leon Richeton (1854-1934) after the original painting by Scottish artist ERSKINE NICOL (1825-1904). The artist was born in Edinburgh and taught in Ireland in the years surrounding the Great Potato Famine of the late 1840's...

Oil on canvas portrait of a middle aged man seen in profile, not signed on the front, possibly signed on the reverse, 20" by 16", unframed. The man appears to be a clerk in his work clothes, circa 1910 to mid 1930 perhaps. On the reverse written faintly on the canvas is "WM. HODES FRANKLIN" or similar--. This is a popular, folky image of an apparently well known 19th century trotting horse pulling the single driver of the sulky. Since the print has traveled without glass, it has acquired a number of faults common to Currier and Ives prints, including water stains (especially at top rig...

Original pencil figural drawing, 15" by 9" plus a gray mat, unframed, signed at lower right "K. Delaney" and dated there 1979. I do not know who the artist might have been but he or she certainly had a talent as a draftsperson. The condition is generally good save for modest paper browning and there is tape residue on the reverse from clumsy attachment to the mat. Fit a frame on this and you'll have a pleasant, nicely executed drawing.

Watercolor on paper painting 9 1/2" by 12 3/4" (14 1/2" by 18 1/2" framed), unsigned, executed on old watermarked paper. The scene is a landscape, perhaps an arid landscape of the west, but it's hard to tell for sure. Certainly it has some age, as the paper is toned (see edge indicating old mat presence in the past) and the reverse is even more browned, with sort of reverse images of the paint. The work is lightly taped at the sides to a modern white mat board, and the frame is gold and new a...

The painting is signed at lower right "Elsie Crosam" or "Crosom", "Creson", or similar. The piece would be an excellent practice work for a budding restorer as there is a major rip in the center, as shown; or you might buff up the frame a bit and use it with another painting. There is light wear on it.

Watercolor on heavy watercolor paper, unsigned, the subject the sea coast, painted in an impressionist style by an American artist. The work was found in Laguna Beach, California but I cannot say that this is a Southern California work---although I wonder if this might well be Laguna's "Bird Rock", as I think I've seen other works depicting that feature, and the two birds above this might be symbolic. Signed at lower left "Albert L. I don't see a listing for the artist. The work was sold by an interior design firm here in Los Angeles, which no doubt incorporated this unusual painting into an interesting set...

Engraving on paper, the sheet 16" by 13 /4" (23 3/4" by 20" as framed), the subject man's cruelty to animals. This work, part of a series of images dealing with the subject, has become over time a landmark commentary on man's cruelty to his fellow creatures. Watercolor and sepia brown ink on thin paper drawing of swans in a pond surrounded by vegetation, the sheet itself 5 3/8" by 11 5/8", apparently unsigned/undated, and with no watermarks I can see. If I had to guess as to age and origin I would say circa 1800 English, possibly later 18th century. The drawing is in very good condition for its age, with quite fresh colors. By well listed HENDRIK GERRIT TEN CATE (1803-1856) is this 9 1/2" by 13" watercolor on paper painting (15" by 19" as framed), laid long ago to a card, the subject a few chickens pecking the soil in front of a ramshackle thatch roofed structure I would think might be a barn or out building, except for the telltale domestic woodsmoke venting from the roof. The painting is actually signed "H.J. ten Kaet" at lower left. I'm not an expert on the large ten Cate family of painters in the Netherlands,...

This is a most unusual and appealing pop art painting (unframed, 27" by 35") by a mid-coast California artist, Tom Shultz (1943-2017). Works by the artist, who passed away in his mid seventies, have been exhibited at a number of galleries, particularly in the Paso Robles area of central California. The piece is entirely hand painted (not silkscreened, which I at first thought a possibility) on a spongy, soft pulpboard, which the artist has also painted on the reverse (an abstract). The painting is a beautiful example of American impressionism of the early 20th century, with some really lovely colors hiding under the grime of nearly 90 years.
