The haunting face especially reminds me of some of these esteemed artists' works...

The body is composed of two phoenixes, the heads of the birds naturally forming the handles. The stone is very hard, green speckled with translucent white. The cover is also formed of 2 birds, it is not pierced so it is possible that it is not a censer, although it can be used without a cover. It is placed on a finely carved hardwood base. A striking miniature with a good attribution to George Newcombe. As opposed to the more usual bust length rendering, this is a 3/4 length pose. That, combined with the style of the dress, intentionally gives a longer, or imposing, feel to the figure.

When the organic substrate of the painting was trimmed, it was done unevenly and close to an edge, so it could be framed better than in the current half of a travel case. Sight size is 3 1/8" by 2 1/2".

The study photo on the left is a close up of Mr. John White Field,a Philadelphia Merchant, which was painted by John Singer Sargent in the early 1880's. The study image in the center shows what Mr. Field looks like with the beard removed. The image on the right shows an earlier Sargent portrait of Mr. Field.
