19th century, miniature French self-portrait painting of Elizabeth Vigee-Lebrun with her daughter. Lebrun caused a public scandal when her “Self-Portrait with Her Daughter Julie” was exhibited at the Salon of 1787 showing her smiling and open-mouthed (“bearing her teeth”), which was in direct contravention of traditional painting conventions going back to antiquity. This carved lapis lazuli melon shape snuff bottle is 2 ½ inches tall, 1 ¾ inches wide and 1 ¼ inches thick. The artist carved a large melon as the snuff bottle and a smaller melon with leaf and spouts as decoration. The snuff bottle is well hollowed but has some natural flaws. It is in great condition.

Old circa 1940's chalk portrait drawing of a young woman with red hair and striking light eyes, 22" by 16" (27" by 20 1/2" framed in green metal strip frame), apparently unsigned. This is one of several drawings I encountered by (I believe) the same artist. Two other drawings were signed, but illegibly, so the identity of the artist is a mystery. I think the paper might have been rolled at one time as under certain raking light conditions one can see soft horizontal, roughly parallel creases....
