Found in Massachusetts, a mixed media (pastel, pencil and black ink) old drawing on paper of a clipper ship at sea, 7" by 9 1/2" (15" by 18 1/2" framed behind glass), signed at lower right corner with initials "A.L" or "A. G." or similar. The ship flies an unidentified flag at the stern. I feel this is likely European though it could possibly be of American origin...
Large 27" by 33 1/2" (33" by 39" framed), oil on canvas still life cornucopia painting of fruit and flowers including tulips and carnations, in a basket set on a vaguely defined table top against a dark background, apparently unsigned, circa mid 19th century but in the tradition of 17th century Dutch still life. This came recently from a fine area home, where it was proudly displayed in the living room. I do not see a signature...
Fine watercolor painting of the famous Chartres cathedral in central France, signed at lower right "G. Lefevre" and titled at lower right"Le Pont du Massacre a Chartres" at lower left. The work is by listed French artist GABRIEL ALBERT MARIE LEFEVRE. Not a lot of biographical information is available, but he painted landscapes and historical buildings in France in the 19th century. This work measures 6" by 8 3/4" inside the fine hand-drawn ornate mat, and 16 1/4" by 17 3/4" as framed...
Watercolor painting of a lake and scenic mountains, 6" by 8 1/2" (10" by 12" in simple framing with no mat), apparently unsigned, circa mid 19th century, likely English. The gentleman from whom I purchased this makes regular trips to England and brings back drawings and paintings which he sells, so, that is why I am fairly confident that this is indeed English. The work needs a mat at least although frame could be retained...

Works by ALBERT HORATIO SLADE (1843-1922) are quite rare in the marketplace. The few that have come to auction feature coastal scenes of Los Angeles, San Diego and Ventura Counties. Prices of $8,000 and even $12,000 have been achieved on several larger works that are site-specific. Some are of great historical interest, as they document early buildings and communities. Slade was born in England and had a photography studio in Toronto, Canada by 1879. He was in San Diego by 1887...

By well listed HENDRIK GERRIT TEN CATE (1803-1856) is this 9 1/2" by 13" watercolor on paper painting (15" by 19" as framed), laid long ago to a card, the subject a few chickens pecking the soil in front of a ramshackle thatch roofed structure I would think might be a barn or out building, except for the telltale domestic woodsmoke venting from the roof. The painting is actually signed "H.J. ten Kaet" at lower left...

A wood engraving, late 19th century, titled at bottom center "The Yosemite Valley, California", the image a breathtaking panorama of the waterfalls and sheer cliffs of the world-renowned natural wonder, set off by foreground trees and rocky ledges. Although the vintage print is perhaps not an actual Harper's Weekly work, it is in that vein and style. Not examined out of the frame, which is an attractive dark distressed burl wood or quality wood simulation. There is a very subtle hand coloring...

A good, small-size 19th century Mexican retablo depicting San Jeronimo. He is shown here his traditional attributes of penitence--the bloody scourge, a skull, and rocks. He is often shown with fresh self-inflicted wounds, in this case a spray of blood droplets from his chest. San Jeronimo was the first to translate the Hebrew text of the Old Testament into Lati...

Watercolor on heavy paper of trees leaning over a lake, a swooping bird and small boat with primitive figures in the right lower portion, 12" by 21 1/2", signed at lower left "J. H. Dore" or "T. H. CROSSING THE STREAM; Oil on Canvas
Thomas Creswick was a British landscape painter. Among his most favorite subjects were English and Welsh streams and British rural scenery. He exhibited in many art venues including the Royal Academy and the British Institute of Art.
Although the painting is not signed, there is an old brass plaque on the frame which, along with the style, leads us to believe that it is likely a Creswick
A most unusual and interesting DOUBLE-SIDED pencil drawing on wove paper, one side featuring an indian in headdress snatching a child off the shore, a tiny fenced white settlement visible in the upper left corner; the other side features a white man in frontier clothing holding his rifle as a native brave swings his tomahawk. Both sides are signed "E Thompson artist". I am not aware of a known artist by this name so this will rest squarely in the folk art or historical categories. The subtle ...

Oil on canvas, Unsigned
Painting size: 30” x 20”
Frame size: 36.25” x 26.5”
This sweet genre painting of a shepherdess with her flock reflects the theme of the child-of-nature, a sensibility embraced by Victorians during the 19th century. The figure’s youth and comely face convey innocence, while her steadfast pose next to the goldenrod suggests that she is at ease in her environment.

Very antique drawing of a building, maybe a hotel/drinking establishment combination, large for its time and place, dominating a street scene filled with a number of tiny yet interesting figures, including a drummer at right; two horses; and even a dog. The artist used a soft paper and some kind of gouache or tempera, which allowed him to show fine detail, as well as a light pastel touch in the sky. The sign over the door of the est...

A PAIR of American oil on board mountain landscapes, each 23 1/2" by 11 3/4" (29 1/2" by 17 1/2" framed), both signed at lower corner A. A. Baker. There does not seem to be biographical information on the Hudson River-inspired artist, who likely painted these in the mid 1880's. It is doubtful that they have ever been cleaned. There is a smell of smoke. One has a 1" puncture of the board (in the tree at right), the pressure having come from the reverse side; the piece remains attached. Frames...

An oil on canvas laid on Masonite painting of a young brunette woman, the view from the breasts up, against a neutral dark background, signed in red illegibly at top left corner. The piece measures 17 1/2" by 12 3/4" (24 1/2" by 19 1/2" framed). More than likely the artist is French, judging from the overall style, signature, and the stenciled numbers "1208" on the frame.
