This is an interesting example of a monotype, in which art is created on a piece of glass which is then pressed against paper to produce a unique image. The artist is well listed and his paintings sell well at Canadian auctions. At first glance, this work could easily pass for a watercolor; a monotype is something of a hybrid, with characteristics of prints and original art. It measures 17 3/8" by 13 1/2" inside the mat; with an additional 5 1/4" of mat and frame on a side...

A complex mixed media drawing, in the style of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), featuring geometric shapes and forms, measuring 7 1/2" by 11 3/4" inside the mat opening (17" in 21" in frame). The drawing is created with graphite, watercolor, gouache and perhaps pastel crayon. The detail is tight and finished. A very decorative work with color and form, sure to be a conversation piece.

I am not familiar with the apparently unlisted artist might be but he or she was talented and possibly familiar with the San Francisco School/California School, Northern California School of art---artists like David Park, Nathan Oliveira, Elmer Bischoff and Manuel Neri. The haunting face especially reminds me of some of these esteemed artists' works...

Large (21 1/4" by 30 1/4" plus 3 1/2" mat and gold frame) highly detailed drawing of a royal Indian elephant festooned with festive "hat", bells and rug, seen in profile, and surrounded by a decorative floral border. This is classic Indian art executed in a traditional style, though I believe it is of fairly contemporary age. The silk is backed by rather cushy, soft material. Frame is in good condition with minor wear...

For the collector of botanical drawings and art, a nice unframed 11 7/8" by 9 3/8" floral watercolor drawing highlighted with a little gum arabic in the nineteenth century tradition. It is not signed, but I think at lower left in old faint pencil it says "yellow aralia", and at bottom, very faint and barely visible, there is a lot of illegible pencil writing. This likely dates to the 1860's to 1880's period...

This is a work squarely in the Hudson River style by a talented landscape artist of the second half of the century, DANIEL CHARLES GROSE (1838-1900). The scene is a significant river winding among steep green bluffs, a feathery tree at left, the only sign of the hand of man a split rail fence. Signed at lower left and dated there 1874, the work measures 8" by 12" (12 3/4" by 17" in its original attractive old gilded frame)...

Watercolor on heavy paper laid on board, 30" by 22", unframed, signed at upper left corner in ball point pen "Ernest W. Scanes, 3/25/66, Otsego Remnant". Scanes (1909-1994) is best known as a Michigan artist, certainly a Midwest artist, but also, due to his illustration of books and ads, he is known as an illustrator as well. Watercolor on paper painting of an old wooden church of northern New Mexico, signed at lower right by artist ROSS PAXTON (1931-2003). The painting is very impressionistic. Paxton was born in rural northeast Oregon and went to college in Albuquerque, and later lived in New Jersey, furthering his art career in New York City.
