Charcoal drawing on paper laid on thin board, 28" by 38", unframed, signed at lower right "McBride". I am not familiar with the apparently unlisted artist might be but he or she was talented and possibly familiar with the San Francisco School/California School, Northern California School of art---artists like David Park, Nathan Oliveira, Elmer Bischoff and Manuel Neri. The haunting face especially reminds me of some of these esteemed artists' works...
Large (21 1/4" by 30 1/4" plus 3 1/2" mat and gold frame) highly detailed drawing of a royal Indian elephant festooned with festive "hat", bells and rug, seen in profile, and surrounded by a decorative floral border. This is classic Indian art executed in a traditional style, though I believe it is of fairly contemporary age. The silk is backed by rather cushy, soft material. Frame is in good condition with minor wear...
For the collector of botanical drawings and art, a nice unframed 11 7/8" by 9 3/8" floral watercolor drawing highlighted with a little gum arabic in the nineteenth century tradition. It is not signed, but I think at lower left in old faint pencil it says "yellow aralia", and at bottom, very faint and barely visible, there is a lot of illegible pencil writing. This likely dates to the 1860's to 1880's period...
This is a work squarely in the Hudson River style by a talented landscape artist of the second half of the century, DANIEL CHARLES GROSE (1838-1900). The scene is a significant river winding among steep green bluffs, a feathery tree at left, the only sign of the hand of man a split rail fence. Signed at lower left and dated there 1874, the work measures 8" by 12" (12 3/4" by 17" in its original attractive old gilded frame)...
Watercolor on paper, 13 1/2" by 9 1/2" (and simple frame 1 3/8" wide), unsigned, the subject a hushed redwood forest obviously in Northern California, the sunlight dappling the forest floor, and a slight hint of man's intrusion in the form of a split wood fence or gate. The colors, handling, and subject matter suggest the hand of important early California watercolorist LORENZO P...
Oil on canvas painting of fruits in a shallow dish, 6" by 12" (10" by 16" nicely framed), signed at lower right by the well-known American artist ALEXANDER BROOK (1898-1980). The subdued colors and careful arrangement suggest familiarity with the great Italian still life master Giorgio Morandi. There is a coldness, a stillness, that is quite monumental. Brook was born in Brooklyn, and studied at the Art Students League from 1914-1918...
Watercolor on heavy paper laid on board, 30" by 22", unframed, signed at upper left corner in ball point pen "Ernest W. Scanes, 3/25/66, Otsego Remnant". Scanes (1909-1994) is best known as a Michigan artist, certainly a Midwest artist, but also, due to his illustration of books and ads, he is known as an illustrator as well. I have previously owned a 1947 gouache, also of skiers, and am currently offering a charcoal drawing by him in my shop...
Watercolor on paper drawing, unframed, 15" by 21 1/2" inside the gold mat, the subject two proper late Victorian women with parasols, on a small boat in a lake landscape, towering trees in the background, signed at lower left with what appears as "D. G. Streeton", and dated there 1898. This is a nicely executed work, probably American. I cannot seem to match it to a known artist. It is not the work of Australian Arthur Ernest Streeton...
Watercolor on paper painting of an old wooden church of northern New Mexico, signed at lower right by artist ROSS PAXTON (1931-2003). The painting is very impressionistic. Paxton was born in rural northeast Oregon and went to college in Albuquerque, and later lived in New Jersey, furthering his art career in New York City. After serving in the Army, in the Korean War, Paxton remained in New York for much of his life, an illustrator for AC&R ad agency, and handled major accounts...
Watercolor on painting of Pirates Alley in the famous French Quarter of New Orleans, 14 1/4" by 5 1/4", 23" by 9 1/2" framed behind non-glare glass, signed at lower left by the well-known New Orleans artist ROBERT M. RUCKER (1932-2001). Rucker is recognized for his contributions to art of New Orleans, the lower Mississippi River valley, Louisiana, and the Old South...
Oil on canvas painting of snowy high mountain framed by a lake and trees, unusually large size for the artist's works at 20" by 36" (24 1/2" by 40 1/2" framed). Although unsigned (and Detreville's output frequently WAS unsigned), the handling, subject matter and color palette almost certainly suggest the hand of the noted California painter. I have owned and sold other unsigned paintings as being by Detreville, and I will stand by this one being by him as well...
Oil on canvas, 14" by 21" (20" by 27" as framed), the subject a landscape near the sunset of a winter day in the Netherlands. Classic elements of the scene include bare trees, billowing gray clouds, a distant windmill, modest waterside homes, small boats, and a figure with her back turned towards the viewer. The painting is signed at lower right with a signature that resembles that of noted Dutch painter EVERT PIETERS (1856-1932), but I am not representing this as a work by that important pain...
Oil on canvas, 17" by 9" and thin original wood frame, signed lower left "M Stuart", depicting a young woman in greenish gray paint. This is more a work of figural art, really, than mere portrait. The sitter is unknown, as is the artist; there is a listing for a Mimi Stuart (1959-) but I am not convinced this is by that artist. Signature looks as if it could be by a British hand, judging from the style of writing. It is a professional signature, though, and this is not a work by an amateur....
Pencil on watermarked paper drawing of a tall female nude, 16" by 11 1/4" inside the mat, 23 1/4" by 18 3/4" framed, signed at lower right by the artist and dated there 1933. DAME ETHEL WALKER (1861-1951) is a modern British artist of significance, known for an impressionistic and poetic style with subject matter ranging from portraits and studies of the female figure to seascapes, landscapes, still life florals, and decorative compositions featuring mythological and allegorical material. She ...
Lithograph on paper, the image 8 1/2" by 7 3/4", the sheet 12 1/2" by 9 3/4", and 15 1/2" by 12 1/2" as framed, titled at lower left "Old Curiosity Shops, New York", and signed at lower right by the listed artist, generally associated with California impressionist works, EUGENE FRANDZEN (1893-1972). Frandzen was born in San Diego but drifted east in steps, studying first at the Art Institute of Chicago, and then later doing commercial work in New York and studing at Art Students League and Gran...
Oil on canvas large painting of an interior, 40" by 30", approximately 46" by 34" in white frame, signed at lower right by the artist ERWIN WENDING (1914-1993), and dated there "58". The image and colors used are rather expressionist, in the manner typical of the few Wending works that have appeared on the market. According to an online biography, Wending was born in Freiberg, Germany in 1914, the year in which World War One began. After completing art studies at the Dresden Art Academy in 19...
Very subtle and elegant oil on canvas, 24 1/2" by 30" (27 1/2" by 33 1/2" as framed) signed at lower right by listed Midwest artist MARY C. PETERSON and dated "31", showing an Asian inspired still life scene in monochromatic minimalist tones of beige, gray and tan. The artist added just a spot of color at lower left where two iris are in full flower. This is a particularly easy to live with painting---I enjoyed it on my wall for quite some time. It bears an old label on the reverse: "THE ART...
Large unframed oil on canvas painting of three central figures chatting, other figures in the distance, 24" by 36", painted in a highly impressionist manner, and signed at lower left with the familiar "Buenaventura" signature. The artist is either ALFREDO BUENAVENTURA (1942-1982) or his uncle CESAR BUENAVENTURA (1922-1983). I cannot be certain because their works often look very similar, as do their signatures, and in this case the beginning of the signature is difficult to discern. Cesar was...
Watercolor and gouache on paper of a backwater creek or lake surrounded by feathery trees, 12 1/2" by 19 1/2" plus 3 1/2" of mat and frame, unsigned, most likely American. The work is in very good shape save for some age browning of the paper most visible by comparing to the top inch or so which evidently at one time was hidden under a mat. The artist was obviously skilled in watercolor. A very peaceful scene for your wall.
Oil on canvas laid on masonite, 14" by 11" and 3 1/2" wide frame, signed at lower right "C. DE VRIES". This is a pleasing work showing a young woman of central or alpine regions of Europe, holding in her hand a typical felt hat of the area, a window at rear letting in natural light that beautifully illuminates the subject. I have researched this name and find one listing that appears to correspond to the signature, one Belgian artist CAMILLE DE VRIES (1854-after 1924). Nevertheless, the work...
An example of the wildly popular art of artist EDNA HIBEL (1917-2014), internationally known for her art in many media, the themes usually promoting peace, or exploring universal themes such as motherhood. This lithograph print is signed in pencil by the artist at lower right and is numbered at lower left. I believe the title is "Francesca", dating from 1979. Hibel was born in Boston and spent much of her life in South Florida, where a museum of her works stands on the campus of Florida Atlan...
An impressionist oil on canvasboard painting of coastal cliffs, rocks and waves, likely California, signed at lower left in red by listed American painter DAVID SPURLIN JR. (1923-2009). The 11" by 14" work (18 1/2" by 21 1/2" in distressed style wood frame) features strong wave and action, and the five shorebirds at lower right, and their reflections in the wet sand are all beautifully handled. The painting could used a cleaning to remove smoke and yellowed varnish, and there is a hairline 2 1...
An unframed oil on canvas painting of a dreamy waterfall, the deep and mysterious gorge featuring palm trees and at left a small flower-bedecked modest home, the 24" by 18" work signed at lower right "Carolyn". Condition is excellent, the work needing only a frame. The rendering of the palms reminds a bit of the way Filipino artist Romeo Tabuena painted such scenes.
A PAIR of early portraits in pastel on paper, of a middle-aged man and woman (about 45 or 50 years of age), the male portrait signed along the lower right edge "E. Yohn 1841". The works measure 20 3/4" by 17 3/4" as framed. Considering the advanced age, condition of these fragile works is excellent. There is a small edge tear at extreme upper edge of the female portrait. They were framed years ago without a mat, the pastel in near or direct contact with the glass, but there does not appear t...
Original lithograph print, 1979, featuring, as the AskArt listing so aptly describes, "joyful scenes that depict the plague of childhood in a childlike way...". The artist was born in La Paz, Bolivia, and was in Europe while very young, receiving art instruction. She trained in printmaking under Johnny Friedlaender. By the mid 1960's she had already received recognition for her work, and in 1979 the UNICEF organization utilized her imagery in a poster. Boulanger's art has demonstrated worldw...
A circa turn of the century oil on canvas painting of a creek and surrounding woods in the autumn of the year, 11 1/2" by 22 1/2", on canvas, and 17 1/2" by 29" in likely original frame, apparently unsigned. The work has survived over a century in excellent condition. No punctures or problems. There are a few chips missing from the frame. A pleasing, easy to live with scene that brings a sense of calm and reflection.
Unusual watercolor of what appears to be a wagon on the plains, piled high with rocks perhaps, and, even, the skull of a buffalo, signed at lower right "P. PARSONS '96". The watercolor is on paper and measures 8 1/2" by 18 3/4" (15 1/4" by 25 1/4" as framed). The work is in excellent condition with no foxing visible. I do not see an obvious listing for the artist. Found in San Diego area. Recently, on the east coast, I saw a watercolor coastal scene signed in the same manner.
This is an elegant etching in grays and black on heavy white paper (or possibly could be considered an aquatint with etching I believe), the sheet measuring 29 1/2 " by 21 1/2", in a narrow modern simple frame, crisply pencil signed by the artist, with a Chinese symbol resembling a traditional artist's stamp at lower right (possibly for the word "Ping") and numbered 41/110 at lower left, and titled "Life" in English and presumably Chinese, at lower left center. This is a work of the year 1970 w...
Oil on canvas, 24" by 36" (33" by 45" as framed), signed at lower left "Cantrell". This is a good sized oil of a peaceful scene with tree and a house against the setting sun. I date the work to the 1970's or 1980's. Condition good with some light craquelure and very slight dimpling, but no holes. The frame upper left corner is separating just a little bit.
Acrylic on canvas, 23" by 35" plus 5/8" wide black simple frame, signed on reverse with what could be "Tamworth" or "Ramworth" plus copyright symbol (unsigned on front). This is an op-art type piece with a definite three dimensionality to it.......the dots "float" over the rest of the pattern, casting "shadows".......it's quite the contemporary work and would look great in any modern setting. If anyone can identify the artist, please let me know. I would imagine from the professional handlin...

Oil on canvas painting, 30" by 20", unframed, of two deer in a silent forest of towering redwoods, shafts of light penetrating to the forest floor, signed twice at lower left by the noted Northern California artist CHARLES DORMON ROBINSON (1847-1933). This is a classic old painting of the northern part of the Golden State, by one of its most appreciated historical painters. Robinson was born in Maine but was in San Francisco during the Gold Rush days. As a youth, he returned to the east for educ...
An elegant, impressive, impressionist painting on canvas of a park scene with figures, signed at lower right by listed Polish artist TADEUSZ ROMAN (1906-1993). The 28" by 31 1/4" work (33 1/2" by 37" nicely framed) features an elegant, monochromatic, subdued palette for the most part, but the artist has chosen to feature intense bright color in the various figures, thereby creating a simply beautiful and artistic work that borrows from the "Ecole de Paris". The whimsical modern style and color...
A surrealistic oil on canvasboard scene of dream-like bizarre figures, several of which have fish-like characteristics, 11" by 14" (15 1/4" by 18 1/4" in attractive older frame), signed at lower right corner "Victor Brauner" and dated below "25.3.1949". The work is offered as in the style or manner of highly important Romanian-born artist Victor Brauner (1903-1966). The Brauner catalogue raisonne experts in France have seen images of the work and confirmed that it is very definitely not by the...
By the hand of early Plein Air master artist GEORGE KENNEDY BRANDRIFF (1890-1936), a small but pretty and highly impressionistic painting, "San-Bernardino--Mt. Baldy", circa late 1920's. The oil on canvas laid on board measures 10 1/4" by 12" (15" by 16 1/2" in contemporary gold frame). The artist's estate stamp signature appears at lower left; on the reverse is written in old hand "Brandriff/San Bernardino"; and the rectangular David & Sons estate stamp for Brandriff is at left. The prov...
