A rare miniature portrait by Leopold Unger, painted with watercolors on organic wafer. The sitter, a very attractive blue-eyed young woman with brown hair done in sausage curls, has a wistful or slightly sad expression on her face and in her eyes. She is in a black dress with black lace edging at the bodice, and is sitting in a brownish-red chair, holding a red book, and with a multicolored scarf draped over her arm.

It appears to be a sunset scene in the orientalist manner of the 19th C, probably a scene in northern Africa. His paintings sell for up to $80,000.

Originally conceived as part of a figural group for a larger commission, Charity depicts the doting love of a mother for her two children. Paul Dubois ( 1829 - 1905 ) originally exhibited it at the Salon of 1877. The famed Barbedienne foundry reproduced smaller versions for interior decoration.
