Toulon is a city on the French Riviera and a large port on the Mediterranean coast...

This is a very finely executed watercolor on paper of a young woman in the clothing of the old country. I've opened this up and see that the work is on paper laid on a board, and it is not signed. The measurements inside the gold mat are 9 1/4" by 7 1/4" (17" by 13" in ornate old frame). I am sure, given the quality of the work (note the care lavished on the eyes and face, in particular), that the artist would be someone recognized and listed...

Even though the spelling differs ("Sidney"), this could be by or after the well-known English 19th century artist THOMAS SIDNEY COOPER (1803-1902), who was known for his landscapes with farm animals. Found in southwestern New Hampshire is this charming drawing, 7 3/4" by 5 3/4" (9 5/8" by 7 3/8" framed), the subject a lady with a slight neoclassical profile, standing isolated against an extensive landscape. There's no signature nor other information but it would appear to be an American drawing dating to the 2nd quarter of the 19th century...

From our European Collection, a wonderful signed and dated (1860) oil on canvas entitled "The Offering" by British genre painting master John Bagnold Burgess (1830-1897). Burgess was a well -accomplished painter of the mid-late 19th century, regarded as highly in his own time, as he is nowadays. He was nominated to membership of the Royal Academy in 1889, where he had over 70 paintings displayed from about 1850 all the way through to his death in 1897...

This is a rare original mezzotint by British artist, Sir Francis Seymour Haden. The title of this work is: "Harlech No II", it was created and printed in 1880. A combination of mezzotint, etching and drypoint, hand signed in pencil lower left border. This image appears in the Schneiderman catalog as image number 197. The image measures 8X11 3/4 inches. This is the V state of V.. This is a rarely seen image by Haden. Richly inked and printed.

Watercolor painting of a blue-eyed dark haired younger man with long sideburns, seated in a chair, circa 1860's, possibly a bit earlier, apparently unsigned, 9" by 6 1/2" (12 1/4" by 10 1/4" framed). The drawing shows some evidence of 150 years of age, with some light surface scratches in a few spots, a circular discoloration on the paper at left wall, and a little other foxing/discoloration. Found in Florida. I would lean towards the work being of American, rather than English, origin.
