Torii Kiyonaga, Japanese, 1752-1815, "Two Women with Young Servant". This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga measures 9 1/2 x 7 inches. It is signed, sealed and titled within the image. Kiyonaga was one of the great masters of the full-color print depicting courtesans, beautiful women and Kabuki actors. Head of the Torii school, he excelled with "bijin-ga" (beautiful women) prints and these were considered to be his best works.

This is a good sample of using the natural color of agate to create an interesting snuff bottle. It is 3 inches tall, 1 1/8 inches wide and 1 inch thick. The artist used the orange of the agate to create a large squash and small squash hanging on its side. The black section of the stone color was used to create a lucky bat; the lighter color of the stone served to create a monkey grabbing the smaller squash. A fine 19th century miniature version of Gilbert Stuart's "Lansdowne" portrait, the iconic 1796 life size portrait of George Washington. The painting here is done in watercolor and gouache on organic wafer. From its origin until the present day many copies of the portrait have been made, but very few on ivory.
