Carved from a jade-like hardstone (possibly serpentine). Rectangular form with a slightly raised grinding surface bordered by a narrow, raised perimeter with a carved depression for water at the top end. Very good condition with no cracks. There is some wear to the grinding surface and to the base. Old patina with old light soiling.

The well-potted gourd-form vases are decorated with overglaze green, yellow, aubergine and red enamels, characteristic of 18th Century, but the paste appears to be consistent with the 19th Century. There are no chips or restorations, however, one of the vases has an old hairline extending from the mouth and is approximately three inches long. The other vase is undamaged. Nuo theater mask representing the smiling Tudigong, the god of the soil and of cereals in ancient Chinese mythology, wearing a formal cap. Wood, with traces of lacquer, fine dark patina. A rare and very good sample of Vietnamese annamese 14 - 15th century under glaze blue and over glaze enamel large jar, rounded side with globular body and unglazed base, jar decorated with under glaze blue and over glaze enamel of mythical beast and cloud motif, base with brown slip, jar is excavated from east java, broken and re struck, minor touch up on the enamel, very good sample for any one who interested into studying early Vietnamese porcelain.
