Both figures are finely carved and in unusually fine condition for these figures, the red laquer fully preserved. Both with closed lids for offerings in their backs. Old tags on the backs from dealers and collectors

In the center are set white jade plates cut in the shape of stylized bats. A Chinese, Neolithic, black ware vessel; probably from the Longshan culture. The vessel is high-fired, relatively light-weigh, and quite thinly potted.
The Longshan culture formed along the upper and lower reaches of the Yellow River valley, from about 3000 to 1900 BC.

This is an excavated piece. There are signs of root growth, and what appears to be an old repair to one side of the vessel.
