At various times over the long history of tea practice in Japan, Korean-ware has come into high fashion and ships full of the finest ceramics from the neighboring country were brought to its shores. Such pieces have long been favored by learned cha-jin (tea people); and, older pieces such as this are quite prized today as relatively few from this era have survived in good condition...

Antique Japanese large temple bronze hibachi. Round form with handles on either side and standing on three low feet. Decorated with raised bands of archaic motifs including alternating chimera and kylin mythical creatures.

Antique Japanese pair of armor boxes. Made of kiri (paulownia) wood and lacquered a deep reddish orange color with black details. Iron hardware including carrying handles. The crest is that of two crossing hawk feathers (Takanoha), possibly the crest of the Abe Clan. The Abe Clan (安倍氏, Abe-shi) was a samurai family that was close to the Tokugawa shogunate.

Very art deco set of 4 Oribe serving bowls. Geometrical disigns and stripes. Ca. 1920. Featuring the distictive olice green glazes and iron rich clays. 5" long by 2 1/2" tall. Ask for shipping quote.

Nabeshima hard porcelain dish. Okawachi kilns. Decoration in underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze enamels. Although the model already exists at the beginning of the 18th century, we do not believe that the dish presented here is authentic. The enamels are perfect, one can distinguish with a magnifying glass discreet wear of use and the enamels show age cracks, but the cobalt blue on the reverse is too pale. It is not a modern copy, as it has been in the Sakura collection for about forty years...

Small gilt copper pot, decorated with flowers in cloisonné enamel. No artist signature but excellent quality. Small precious object Height: 6cm Diameter: 8cm. Good condition. Japon Taisho period.

Antique Japanese kannon biraki tansu. Single section with hinged doors which open to reveal 4 interior drawers; two large and two small. Made all of kiri (paulownia) wood with iron hardware. The large, round lock plate and cross bracing are classical aspects of this type of chest. Used for storing clothing and outfitted with handles for carrying.

SEA BREAMS AND WAVES

Wood carving decoration with the remains of original bule paint as the actual fragment of a certain Japanese temple/shrine construction, Edo-Meiji period, 19th century, approx. 58 x 30 x 6.5cm (22.83 x 11.81 x 2.55in)...

Interesting Arita Imari bowl, late Edo with scalloped rim and panels with reserves of flowers and figural scenes of an elderly teacher (?) surrounded by pupils, the reserves contoured in raised overglaze black. Brocade or diaper patterns in green, red, blue and gilt surrounding a stylized turtle in underglaze blue. The exterior shows three Buddhist symbols repeated three times in underglaze blue, red enamels and gilt. Bull’s eye base and a green-glazed Uzu-Fuku mark...

Kicho made of kosode (meaning kimono with small opening of wrists) which is made of silk damask dyed with beni (safflower). All embroideries are also vegetable dye silk yarn and gold yarn. Kicho is a kind of screen used as blinder, wind guard and partition. It was used in the house of the aristocrats since Heian period (late 8th to 11th century). This one is recycled from kosode kimono possibly late Edo or early Meiji period (mid to late 19th century. The lining is also beni dyed silk damask...

18th century or earlier unsigned iron Japanese sword tsuba depicting four scholars and an attendant boy in a bamboo grove. Nicely designed piece with copper, bronze and silver inlays with gilding, old deterioration to both top and bottom part, but the design and detailing is there - see their faves and robe patterns. Great example of early work. Height 3.14 inches.

This is a Japanese antique Boro noragi indigo dye hemp Meiji (1868-1912). The indigo dye hemp fades with use is very charming. size: Length 75cm (29.5inch) sleeve to sleeve 123cm (48.4inch)

Small cast iron tea-pot. One side is decorated with lotus flowers, the other side is without any decoration. The spout is doubled in bronze, the handle is in copper as well as the lid which has a decoration of small rounds in light relief of different patina, perhaps formerly gilded. The grip button is in silver plated copper and shakudo. It is likely that this type of jug was also used for alcohol as specified on the invoice issued by the seller in Kyoto which dates it to 1850...

Japanese antique wood block print of the sumo wrestler, Tsuneyama Gorojin wearing keshō-mawashi (ceremonial apron-style belt). Gorojin was in the Makuuchi league since 1843. Name used from 1842-1856. He retired in 1859. Print by Kuniyoshi Utagawa and dated 1852 (year of the Rat) or 1853 (year of the Ox). Framed print.

Japanese antique wood block print of the sumo wrestler, Unryū Kyūkichi (Unryū Hisakichi) with beard and wearing a keshō-mawashi (ceremonial apron-style belt). Unryū Kyūkichi was in the makuuchi league since 1852. Name used from 1850-1865. He retired in 1865. Signed by Kōchōrō Toyokuni ga and date seal between 1851-1853. Framed print.
