An antique Japanese Choba Tansu also known as a merchant chest made of Kirinoki (Paulownia) and Hinoki (Cypress) woods,most likely from the Nigata area of Japan. Featuring a Ryo Biraki (hinged double door) design it has a split level shelf where documents and merchant books were stored. Gumpai style handles and hand made iron fittings decorate this chest.

Pilgrim's sodenashi made of hand-spun cotton with writhings which are the name of the pilgrim, the year (Meiji 5, 1871) etc. The places of pilgrimage is Saigoku Sanju-Sansho (33 holy places in the west) which are for worship of Kannon and the oldest places of pilgrimage. Those are located in Kyoto, Osaka, Gifu, Hyogo, Nara, Shiga and Wakayama. The cloth in the back is also hand-spun cotton and vegetable indigo dye. In excellent condition. 45cm x 57cm

Japanese okimono of two Chinese lions one on top of each other carved of boxwood. No signature is found on the okimono. Size: Length:2.75" Width:1.5" Height:3.25".

A small bronze mirror with a diameter of 6.88cm (2.71 inches) and a total length of 12.1cm (4.8 inches) weighing a mere 42gm. Decorated with a Kano school asymmetric composition of a prancing Tiger and Bamboo probably having a common source to similar compositions found on Kakiemon porcelain. The mirror is signed Fujiwara. A finely potted dish decorated with a pattern of scattered shibagaki, bundles of brushwood, which would have formed part of a decorative garden hedge, with boughs of Plum blossom. This is Furosiki made in the Izumo district for Edo period. This is dyed in Katazome and Hikizome. This is dyed in natural indigo plant and Yamamomo. This has a stain such as the image in some points. And this has some small holes. This shows old form of Izumo Furosiki. As for this, cotton is spun by hand and is thick. This is Yogi used in a rich merchant's family of Akita for Edo period. This is drawn in good-quality Tsutsugaki. As for this, a Chinese phoenix drawn boldly is very impressive. It is very elegant. As for this, cotton is spun by hand and is thick. As for this, cotton cloth of the lining is dyed into deep green. Good-quality Tsutsugaki often uses it to lining. A large, very decorative blue and white Imari vase from the 19th. century with a underglaze blue mark to the base. H. : 78 Condition : No damage . There is a fiering crack from the time when this vase was produced ( which can be seen on the last enlargement ) so that it is legitim to say that this piece is in it´s perfect original condition.
