A very unusual cup with an undulating suhama style rim; a formalization of an undulating shore line of spits and coves decorated with a pair of auspicious Horses, uma. The cup measures 9.5cm in diameter and stands 6.5cm high. The cup is in excellent condition, no cracks, chips or restoration. Dating late 18th century circa 1780. 19th century staghorn ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) carved in a shape of standing Okame wearing a long robe and sporting a compass in the front. Possibly had a face in the opening above the compass, but I am not entirely sure. Nicely made, good patina, compass is functional. Height 0.7 inches.

Late Meiji period (1890s to 1912) Japanese buffalo horn kushi (hair comb) with carved and gold lacquered decoration of a phoenix in flight on one side and stylized crest of the Toyotomi samurai family in a shape of flowering paulownia. Superbly made, crisp carving, excellent lacquering, wonderful work in Japanese taste, in great condition. Length 3.2 inches.

Taisho (1920s) lacquered wood kogo (box for incense during tea ceremony) in a shape of a drum . Elegant object in Japanese taste, wonderful lacquer work, two parts fit perfectly, in great condition, a couple of scrathes on the top. Diameter 1.86 inches.

Japanese Imari Porcelain Scalloped Rim dish, Ca. 1920, Meiji period, 5 1/4" diameter-top rim, 1 1/2" high, with typical Imari colors red, green clue and Gold highlighted floral design, unglazed half outer area inside bottom rim, left glazed center area in the bottom. The condition is good.

19th century staghorn ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) carved as geta (a wooden sandal) with gold, red and black lacquer decoration of flowers and leaves. Very nice carving, excellent detailing, pleasant patina. Length 11/16 inches.

Shini-e (memorial portrait) of the Kabuki actor Kikugoro, issued 1903

The actor died at age 60. He is shown holding a Buddhist sutra and his “death poem” in is cursive script above his head.

Signed Utagawa Toyosai, dated: 1903, fine impression and color, left margin slightly trimmed, small brown spot above sutra page, original paper backing possibly from time of issue.

19th century Japanese ceramic miniature seal netsuke modeled as shishi - Buddhist lion - sitting on a rectangular base, its head turned to its left. Late Meiji (1890s to 1912) Japanese temple boxwood seal of round section with original boxwood cover. Excellent quality crisp carving in seal script, old red seal paste in the grooves. Plastic peg indicates the position of the top of the imprint. Beautiful patina on the surface of wood, signs of use adding to the presence of the object.
