An antique Japanese Ko Tansu (personal storage chest) made of Kirinoki (Paulownia) and Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. All original hand made iron fittings including the Warabite handles and finish. The front has a natural Kirinoki wood finish while the case was finished in a wiped Urushi lacquer technique. Constructed using straight dovetail joinery and hardened wooden nails.

Age: Meiji Period (1868-1880)

Very strong early piece, great thoughtful face, excellent incised and etched hair, wonderful detailing of its fingers and toes. Netsuke of characteristic 18th century triangular section, warm yellow patina (darker on the bottom where netsuke was touching the silk of kimono), large and deep himotoshi in accordance with the habit of the time. Rare blue sharkskin porcelain tea caddy with a bird, flowers, and butterflies. The bird and butterflies are glossy and do not have the sharkskin texture giving this piece a beautiful contrast which was not an easy feat for the artist to achieve. The blue background graduates from light at the bottom to darker shade of light blue at the top. Signed and in excellent condition, it measures 6 inches tall with lid on.

This small ivory carving of a geisha is a late Meiji period (1868~1911) product. It is 3 1/8" high, 1 1/4" wide and a little less than 1" thick. It depicts a geisha bowing her head demurely and looking at the floor. Her right hand holds her kimono robe closed; her left hand rests on her chest. The artist signature is on the bottom. It is in great condition.

They are 12 inches (30.4 cm) tall by 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide. The total weight is 17.6 Lb.
