Japanese incense box in the form of a flattened drum with realistic wood grain pattern in gold flake togidashi maki-e lacquer and high relief lacquer to resemble iron studs along the sides. The top of the box is done in low-relief maki-e gold lacquer with the image of a mother hen and father rooster pecking for food with their three infant chicks. The crest and waddle of each rooster are done with touches of red lacquer. The interior box and bottom are done in dense nashiji lacquer gold flakes...

This antler horn nestuke, carved from the antler base, represents a clam shell resting on a decorated circular base. The underside has been carved to show a temple scene located near the sea. This piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration.

19th century marine material ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) in ball shape carved in medium relief with a figure of seated Hotei leaning on his huge bag with gifts as he watches 2 boys at play. Hotei was a historical Chinese monk allegedly living in Wuyue kingdom in the 10th century and known for his jolly nature and love of children, he is considered to be an incarnation of Buddha Maitreya - the Buddha of the Future...
19th century staghorn ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) carved as a smooth clam shell. Good design, shunga connotation as almost inevitable with clam in Japanese art, nice patina on the surface, natural imperfections in staghorn, overall in very good condition. Length 13/16 inches.

Humorous blue and white porcelain netsuke depicting a recumbent Chinese boy with movable biscuit porcelain tongue. The base unglazed and with two himotoshi. Condition: fine, only two short firing cracks. Dimension: 7.7 cm x 3.5 cm wide.
19th century boxwood netsuke of a baby boy crawling on his hands and knees, wearing a bib tied on his back. Excellent rendition of body and limbs showing baby fat, great face, hair knots are inlaid with dark horn. Very beautiful warm brown staining, pleasant patina, overall in excellent condition. 19th century Japanese iron mae-kanagu (tobacco pouch clasp fitting) depicting a scene of a samurai procession performed by six rats in different attitudes. Iron is notoriously difficult to work with. Excellent design, funny topic, superb crisp detailing, gilding to the eyes. Length 2 1/8 inches.
Antique Japanese craftsman's block. Made of keyaki (elm) wood and carved with two fan-shaped handles. Thought the term dai usually refers to plane blocks, this block also functioned as an important tool or surface for a serious artisan. It is unusual in that it is carved with a rectangular opening on the underside, a customization possibly to help hold it in place while in use.
