This is a finely carved 19th century Japanese Netsuke depicting a Standing Samurai, wearing a typical caped robe, who is holding a box with both hands. Stained for effect; rich patina. Unsigned. Netsuke measures 0.76 inches (2.0cm), and 1.47 inches (3.8cm) tall. Netsuke is in excellent condition, as may be seen in the posted photos.

1900's Japanese Sumida Gawa Pottery Vase By Inoue Ryosai with Monkey

It is 11.6 inches (29.5 cm) tall by 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide. It is 4.7 Lb.

It has chips at the monkey's hand and rocks, skip glazes, rubbing of paint, and surface wears and scratches (as seen in the photos).

A similar vase can be seen in the book "Sumida According To Us" by Herbert Karp & Gardner Pond, page 187.

A Chinese Yixing stoneware incense burner in the form of Budai, laughing as usual, grasping a small pile of cash. The stoneware has been attractively enameled with flowers and a Shou medallion decorates his back. The base has an impressed maker’s mark. 19th century.

The incense burner is in two parts, Budai sits on a large cushion, this base features a pierced disc for the insertion of joss sticks.

In Japanese folklore tanuki is a notorious trickster: it drums with his paws on its large belly (tanuki no hara tsuzumi), imitating the sounding of gongs in temples and inns, and leading tired travelers astray in the darkness. 19th century wooden netsuke of two frogs frolicking on differently sized peony buds with stems. Wonderfull quality carving (see finely incised petals texture) carved, very beautiful warm patina. Signed GYOKUSEKI on the bottom - there is Gyokuseki listed on p. 428 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, but this is much better quality carving than his usual work, probably a different carver with the same name.
