Kangxi, 1720, 4 3/8" diameter and 7/8" high-saucer, 2 3/4" diameter and 1 7/8" high-tea bowl, with underglaze blue Leaf mark in blue double circle on the bottom, overglaze red of floral and long leaves design with soft gold touch within scalloped edge rim for the tea bowl and saucer. Some tiny frits around the raised rim area.

Very unusual largeJapanese rope embroidery on silk, the image is a pair of phoenixes, male and female, with the moon waxing and waning (full and crest). This is a privileged image made specially for the court. The pagoda shrine is central to the image centered around the imperial Tokugawa crest symbolizing the divine rule from heaven.

Awesome face, wonderful knobby scull, beautiful rendition of his hair, ribs and limbs. Wood is lacquered in Negoro style - gold lacquer over red, so as the netsuke wears the color of a lower layer starts showing. Very beautifully done himotoshi on the back, superb wear and patina, very impressive sculpture...
